Just pulled the motor on my daughters VT and had trouble removing the clip on the D/S knock sensor (bloody fat finger syndrome lol) and managed to damage it, now the car seems to be running fine in the driveway (no road test yet) since being refitted. What I need to know is how inportant is this and is it ok to drive untill it is replaced ?

Secondly it is recomended that Holden part number M40124 be placed into the radiator after the coolant has been replaced, 3 pelets i beleive, is this also a must do or just something that Holden come up with to make a bit of extra cash ???

The knock sensor will be ok to drive around with not connected, it only changes the fuel map if it pings i.e less timing etc, the check engine light will probally come on because of it.
We used to fit those pellets when i was at holden, i beleive it was something to do with the water pump seal to help seal it or lubricate it, unless it has the orginal water pump i would not worry about it.

Thanks Pete at least I can let the knock sensor slide now till after christmas, as for the water pump being original mmmmmmmmm I could not tell you if it was the factory motor or not lol. I may just chuck them in to be on the safe side, if they are not obsolete ! lol

You can get them at Bursons (depending on what state you are in). It's called "seal well" or similar and looks like an almost black block that you crumble up into the neck of the radiator.
I've used them in V6 commodores as suggested but also gone without. Currently I've got 18 month old coolant in my VY and no problems at 177,000 k's.

Thanks BluHJ, Now you have said that I remember the stuff now, I used it once before. This old VT my daughter has is an ex-cop car with nearly 280,000k on the clock and I just had to replace the aluminium plate on the rear of the motor due to corrosion (an obsolete part from canada now aparently) The rest of the welch plugs looked ok put I would say someone has put bars leak in it at some stage and I got stuck with the problem. So due to its age I think I will be adding the extra sealing compunds lol.

Pellets are only for the V6 not the V8.

No probs Barry but I wouldn't buy an ex police car. I've driven them for the last 30 years and know how they're treated. Admittedly, they are usually well serviced BUT......they are usually driven hard, hot or cold. I've heard them on occasions leaving the station fully cold and hitting the governor or in the earlier ones, valve bounce before they changed. Maybe I would buy a country highway patrol car but definately not a metro one. I wouldn't even consider a general duties (station) car under any circumstances.
You've done well to get to 280 on the motor. Bars leaks tends to block up the radiator as well.
Even though the pellets are for the V6, I don't see a problem using it. You could try silverseal instead. My son in law had a big crack in the plastic tank of his commodore and used silverseal. Lasted 18 months before he had to replace it.

Thanks Andrew, I have bit the bullet and replaced the water pump and radiator for her as well, so touch wood we have solved all the problems. Yes this old girl was a general duties car from Brisbane, body wise its very good, interior was shabby so we replaced that with a WH stato interior and the engine at some stage I would say has been replaced. So after all the dramas my daughter informs me she may "upgrade" now......
Being and ex-Canberra boy I know what you mean about government issued cars, they are never treated kindly but always serviced regularly.

Thanks for all the help guys always appreciated, especially since the gray matter isn't as good as it use to be.
