It's booked in for a dyno tune/analysis on Wednesday and I'll also get a running in session done as obviously the rings haven't bedded in properly yet or there wouldn't be oil in the cylinders.... I'll advise as to what the heck happens after I get it back.. Fingers crossed. Edited by user Tuesday, 12 February 2013 6:45:01 AM(UTC)

Oil in the cylinders? Thats why your plugs are fouling. Sounds like there is a mechanical problem like a ring upside down or valve stems leaking? Hope its just a tune up though!

Just came across this and hope it all was sorted at the dyno. But the coil is the worry for me here. If it is getting 14v when running via the relay and it is a "resistor" 12v coil it will be over voltaged and fail.

So, in a nutshell I got the tune up done on Wednesday and all was supposed to be sorted but it's got less power, won't start easily after it's been sitting for a while ( a new primer was fitted but obviously ain't working) and not much investigating was done as far as I know as to why, I've got a terrible feeling the mechanic just changed the plugs, fitted the new Gas Research convertor I had and tuned it... Drove it for a few days, it was not bad just off idle but the mid range was well down in power , so it's been a matter of "watch and report" whilst driving around using it fir work and hoping I didn't get to feel the dreaded problem returning....
Well, no surprise really but the miss firing plugs are back in town. Un freaking believable. I'm going to put the old distributor back in today, thats the coil in the cap one, and see how that goes. I'm going back to the mechanic who did the tune up and ask exactly what c/o ratio he set it at and why it now has less power. I'm not expecting much in the way of a re tune for free etc but if he's not good about this I'll pop the businesses name up in the forum as a service to other forum members so they don't get the same result.

Can I ask what area you're from (capital city/regional centre) as there are probably a few of us on here who can recommend people familiar with getting the best out of a GRA system, and can recommend someone who has a proven track record. |

Well, today I decided to sort it out myself, as best as I could. I removed the distributor and coil and refitted the old coil in the cap dizzy that was originally in the car till November last year. It's got play in the shaft and is about 10 years old but is something I'd recommended to the two previous mechanics : sustitute a potentially suspect component with a known part that definately works. It took a fair while to time it properly, as I did it the old fashioned way, adjust it and take it for a drive , check for pinging and if none increase the timing a little and drive it again.... Etc etc..... It's running ok , it's definately not as good as when the new distributor was set up for the new cam etc but it's not misfiring at all, and I didn't change the plugs!! And I fixed the primer that was installed by the mechanic last Wednesday , it wasn't wired up correctly but now works every time!! I'll be going to see the mechanic and ask him again why he didn't do what he said he would and why he didn't change back to the distributor installed previously as requested if the new dizzy and tune up didn't come up to scratch. So now what, should I buy a new ignition module for the other newer dizzy and reinstall or go about setting up an original VK Bosch dizzy for straight gas and installing that along with a final retune?

I'm running the original VL HEI dizzy (same as VK) in my car - regraphed for gas by Dr Terry, and fitted with a new module. It's perfect. I'd recommend that route based on my experience with several straight gas Holden V8s.
I'm running 18 degrees intital advance. You can't do that with a standard dizzy graph, as the mechanical advance will go too far at higher RPM. This is why regraphing is important - you want more initial advance, but not much more total advance. |
Cheers,

The difference in performance between the two distributors will be because their advance curves differ, not because of the ignition module.
Get Performance Ignition at Nunawading to check out both distributors. Dick O'Keefe there knows more about distributors than many others have forgotten. Tell him it's for LPG & he can sort it out.
Your Dyno guy sounds like he might have missed a few things if he didn't even wire up the primer correctly. He was probably more concerned with getting the mixture correct than sorting out the overall problem.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

They are quite good there, had a few distributors sorted out when Dick was there, but Dick has sold the business on as far as I am aware. |
