It was around the Christmas edition of unique automobiles and there was an article about a guy getting his seat belts redone at some place in Warwick or Toowoomba who are authorised to do the stitching I cannot remember any details as I have given the magazine away but would like to know the details of this place if anybody knows anything. depending on what model car anything non retractable i doubt they have authorization as i'd love to see someone put their name on neck snapping seat belts as they wont comply with to days regulations but under the table try ebay plenty back yard jobbys |

This was company was also based in Western Australia and they met all compliances and regulations to do the job. I really could not imagine the magazine endorsing the business if it was dodgy.

How is a non retractable seat belt less safe then a retractable one, if they are so unsafe why can Klippan sell non retractables with AS labels on them, and I haven't seen to many race cars with retractable seatbelts.

i'm pretty sure race cars dont comply with the same standards as a road vehicle and yes they do make lap sash new not redone as asked by mr sir.but in saying that speak to Simon from hktg recovery as he gets old belts redone from a company in wa |

I looked into this some time ago now and it is my understanding is that there is only one company in Australia that is officially licensed to do this and who therefore can legally attach a compliance label to their work and that is Seatbelt Solutions. This is why most of the products available on ebay are listed with a qualification indicating that their products are sold for concours purposes only. I think that there is a misunderstanding of the purpose of retractable seat belts. The latest seatbelts have pretensioners etc which pull in the slack of the seat belt to reduce the 'snatch' during an accident then release slightly to reduce whiplash - all very clever, but the original retractable seatbelts which would be fitted to cars more than 5 or 10 years old were retractable simply for convenience so you didn't have to take your seat belt off to reach for your bong in the passenger seat! The retractability had nothing to do with safety except that they prevented people having the seatbelt very loose.

It could be that the 'authorisation' doesn't extend to the retractor mechanisms themselves & only applies to the webbing & stitching etc. It's not only authorisation that's required its also the liability insurance, which would be very specific as to what it covers.
This is only a guess, I may well be wrong.

I had some non-retracting belts done by Aircraft Interiors in Perth, phone 9414 8111 about five years ago, they came back with a certificate and a label on each belt suggesting they are fit for purpose.
