Thanks for that Dr Terry. I just want to keep the ute standard for now I think.
not really to sure how to tackle this one. Should I leave the exterior side trim on.??

G'day all

Had some time to play on the ute today. I found an extra part which may be part of the outback package no one has mentioned.Look at the extra splash guard in front??


And 2 more after an external clean and some surface rust removal. I will get some of engine bay and interior soon

G'day all

Have decided to keep the ute original even repainting in acrylic.
Question is should I restore as much of the original parts as I can or replace for new where I can

Thanks to all and all comments will be taken on board
This ute has all the original documents.(purchase, user manual, ac manual, radio manual paint protection card)

Those side trims were very common in the late 60's through the 70's. Hard to find new rolls of it if you plan on repainting. So original with or without. Keeping old cars original are the trend these days and tend to have the best resale value.

That's the standard Kingswood trim strip. It is screwed on at each end.

Not scewed at both ends on every piece. I think guards are screwed at the front and quarters at the rear, and doors have screws at both ends. Not sure about the tailgate. Rest of the attachments are by the little welded on nipples with plastic clips.

Thanks for the replys. I will have a look at the strips tomorrow and take close up pics for you. Keeping original because I think as an outback package and matching numbers it is a piece of history we cant loose and probably rarer than most.
What do you all think.

I had a look at the strips and they are solid held on by clips only one screw and that is for the rear strip at the door end.







and 1 of the interior uncleaned yet but carpet removed.

They are the standard Kingswood strips. All Kingswood utes had them. WB Kingswood had the thicker moulded ones.
These are not the aftermarket ones that came on rolls. You need to keep them to keep it original. Don't make the mistake of removing the tonneau cover rope clips off the side.
The vertical stainless trims behind the door are unique to Kingswood as well.
Keep it all original as it is a nicely optioned Kingswood which is something that will be very unusual to find in the future.

Do the badges have clips behind them as I cant get them off and don't want to break them ?? Cheers.

Gave a section of the interior a clean and it looks as though I wont need to replace anything except for the carpet and a dash pad and arm rests. it wont be mint but will be original( can I paint a dash pad and arm rests to match my colour?)

Did all hz utes get a rear sway bar?

The way those strips on the rear quarters atrtach ie wrap around into the door gap doesn't look quite right, i'll check it up. They may not be originals. The door has a WB handle on it so it may have a WB door on it too, meaning the strip isn't original to that door.
All HZ's except for the odd rag tyre cab-chassis had RTS so get a rear swaybar.

I had another look at the strips I was wrong so lets see if I can make sense of this.

handle end left hand side door (pop rivet)


hinge end left hand side door(pop rivet)


hinge end right side door(screw)


handle end right side door(screw)


screw at the front on each front guards

Did not check rear of rear sections.

As for wb handles would this be as it was close to the end of hz??

Yes, the WB door handles appeared in late HZ around mid-79, yours being a 7/79 is most likely OK.

I believe the black vinyl finish on those side strips to be unique to HX/HZ, the HJ ones are different.

?? Why does the compliance plate state HZ UTILITY and not HZ COUPE UTILITY??

Had a look at all the brakes and seems ok maybe just a good clean up and some new seals, cylinders and bearings.

They stopped putting COUPE on the plates at some stage. Not sure when.

The HX Kingswood ute I have here has the strips held on with the same pins that hold the vertical stainless strips behind the doors. The tailgate is the same.

My 2/84 WB is a coupe utility. So I don't think they did drop the coupe thing. It may have been plant specific earlier on though.
