Hi, I require some info on 14" GTS wheels for a GTS HQ Monaro. I understand this has been covered before but I have looked through the forum and it is still a bit confusing. I have some questions as follows: what are the correct paint codes for the GTS rims? What is the best way to paint the rims for example is it better to powder coat? I want to widen the rims and fit the widest tyres that are legal so bearing in mind the rules on the change of track and that the tyres can only be 30% wider than the originals what is the widest tyre that can be fitted and correspondingly what is the widest rim to suit? Lastly is it better to fit slightly skinnier rims and tyres on the front and if so what is the difference from the rear legally allowed. I want to send my rims in for widening so any help is greatly appreciated and hopefully by having all this information in one thread it can assist some others?

Thanks!

Choose a rim size that's legal in your state first of all.
In NSW you can go 1" (25 mm) wider in rim width and track.
Then choose a tyre to suit the rim.
You also need to consider clearances and suspension travel.
A wider tyre on the front will be harder to turn when going slow.
If you just want big tyres go for what you can fit in there.

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

Ps Tyres these days can offer better performance in stock width than a wide tyre from the old days.
Also lower profile tyres will be more expensive.
You could buy a better tyre in a stock size for the cost of a lower profile tyre in a standard type.

1971 and 1972 sports wheels were (later Dulux code mentioned first - possibly changed again, don't know much about paint, but was enough information for my guy to chase it up):

"350 Silver" aka "Silver 350 Met" - 4J010 / 562-13383
"350 Grey" aka "Grey 350 Met" - 4H004 / 562-13384

These wheels were made in Canada and are often called 'Canadians'.

1973-1974 HQ sports wheels were manufactured locally for Holden (by ROH? can't remember). I've never wanted these colours so do not know much more than:

"Wheel Silver Metallic" - 562-17216
"Charcoal" - 562-17473

Have also seen all these old colour codes prefixed with 577, never tried to understand why but maybe someone else here can explain.

If not, google the mentioned colour "names" with HQ or Holden also in the search and you'll find a few detailed discussions. Your painter could probably also explain it to you quickly - if not get a new one! Good luck.

Thanks Geer it is a 72 model so I will go with the earlier codes.

Thanks for the comments JBM, the legal rim size seems to be governed by the legal tyre size (30% larger than the widest factory tyre) and the restrictions on the change in wheel track (not increased by more than 25mm) this is according to the vehicle standards bulletin VSB14 that W.A. uses. I suppose this means that a 7" rim is the maximum (12.5mm on each side if you keep the same offset) but if you have an 8" rim can you increase the inside by an extra inch (1.5" further in) without hitting the body and not hitting the top inner edge of the wheel arch then you are not increasing the wheel track. If it is not hitting anything then would it be legal? Has anyone done this? Also was the widest factory tyre a 205 or 185?

My preference would be a 235/60/14 on the front with a 7" rim and a 245/60/14 on the rear with a 8" rim but I need to be sure that it will be legal.

Thanks

If the tyre size for the HQ GTS wheel was the same as the L34 it would be "D", which is approximately 195 in metric. The tyre placard may have the GTS tyre as optional with its size listed.
