Ok Guy's and Gal's just after some opinions in relation to this as my daughter boy friend has a VS V6 5speed fitted with a Getrag that he has killed and the local tranny place has recommended that he replace it with a T5, I always read and thought that the Getrag was the better box?

True of False ??

I would have to agree that the Getrag 5-speed in the VS is not a great box, neither is the T5, but the T5 would be my preference by a huge margin in a VS Commodore.

Getrag are one of the world's largest gearbox manufacturers & like Borg Warner make good gearboxes & some not-so-good gearboxes. They got their good name back in the 80s when the Getrag 5-speed box was the gearbox of choice in Group A racecars. Walkinshaw Rovers & Jags had them as did the Commodores, Mustangs & I believe the Ford Cosworth Sierra.

I don't think that there is any commonality between those Group A boxes & the VS variety.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

The Getrag was introduced in the VS Series II but Holden only used it in the V6 and the V8 retained the T5 as it was the stronger box if I remember correctly. By the time the VS III came out I'm pretty sure that the Getrag was used across the range as a stronger version was available by then.

Personally, I prefer the ratios of the T5 and also the feel of the gear shift and heavier cable operated clutch.

If he's going to keep it for quite a few years the T5 is probably worth the effort of changing the clutch setup etc. If only for a year or two, fix the Getrag.
