Hi Guys,
Haven't been on for ages but I need to quiz the gurus again. I recently had the ol Salisbury rebuilt with one of the 4 pin LSD centers from Street and strip gears in Vic. I had WA diff center put it all in for me using the 3.08 gears I had. Anyway when fitting back into the ute I noticed that I had a hard time trying to line up the locating pins on the rear leaf springs to the diff housing. It seems as if the tailshaft is to long and it is bottoming out on the yoke end on the tansmission shaft. The yoke appears to be all the way in the transmission. I am running a 350 SBC with T400 trans and of course the Salisbury. I have taken a measurement from the uni's centers and it is 1490mm. Can anyone tell me if this is correct for the HQ ute as to me it just dosen't seem right. It was always a tight fit even from when I first put it in a few years ago and I could probably get it to go back in again but I think there should be some amount of freeplay or slide on the spline to account for suspension movement.

Any help appreciated as always.

OK so ive been researching this a bit more on the net and it looks like I have a Statesman Tailshaft that should be ok for what im doing, however this has brought up one more issue that could be a possibility. The T400 comes in different variants in regards to the length of the extension housing. I will have to check mine , but if this is the case (can anyone confirm this) then I may have a long housing that is causing the issue. I will measure the length of the housing today. The T400 was purchased from a reputable shop as a recon T400 back in the early days so I have no idea what its from.

Anyway, keep researching.

HJ-HZ Statesman with TH400 is a different shaft to a HQ Statesman 350 TH400, differnet part numbers anyway. HQ is a gold tailshaft. HJ-HZ i'm not sure what colour it is. But the HJ-HZ shaft has a smaller rear uni that the 350 HQ so that at least explains some of the part number difference, but I'm almost certain the HJ-HZ 308 TH400 shaft is longer than the HQ 350 TH400 shaft. The HQ sedan/coupe 350 TH400 shaft is 1394.5mm and the HJ-HZ 308 TH400 shaft is 1412mm so the Statesman will be the same 17.5mm difference on a longer shaft. What you probably need to do is get onto Greg at Classicozwreck as he'll probably have a HQ 350 Statesman tailshaft, but you'll also need to either pull the diff out and get a 1-tonner diff yoke fitted or buy an adapter uni that has 1" cups on one axis and 1.125" cups on the other.
Given the 76mm difference in wheelbase between a sedan/coupe and a ute/van/wagon/statesman, add that to 1412mm of the HJ-HZ TH400 shaft gets you 1488mm which is the shaft you have, so you have a HJ-HZ TH400 shaft.

Excellent, thank you for that. You certainly know your stuff. This explains a lot and would definitely save me a lot of heartache in relation to what I was thinking with regards to the T400 extension housing etc.
I will have to check first to see what size uni's im running and make a decision from there. I may even consider getting the tailshaft shortened and balanced to suit, depending on the diff yoke, cost etc. (I don't really want to go upsetting the preload on the pinion as it has only just been rebuilt, the adapter uni sounds like the go).
Well if I decide to get it modified and balanced, from your calculations, If I take the HQ 350sedan/coupe measurement and add the 76mm for the longer wheelbase then I should be spot on for a measurement between centers. i.e 1394.5 + 76 = 1470.5 which is 17.5mm shorter than what I currently have and should give me enough movement on the splines to stop bottoming out. This amount dosent seem like much, Is it enough?
I will of course chase up Greg to quote me on a shaft and make a decision from there.

Thanks again for your help.

That sounds about right. The place that does the tailshaft work will get you to do a specific measurement too if you do shorten what you have.

According to my lists the tailshaft length for a 350/TH400 Statesman is 1470.5 mm while a 308/TH400 one is 1490 mm.

Yep spot on Terry. Looks like I have the wrong one. Thank god I havent done too much driving on the existing one as it could have done some serious damage for sure. I will have to weigh up my options as to which way I should go (shorten or source another one. price dependent of course). Might post a wanted ad on this site see if anyone has one here in WA.

Thanks Trev...

Given the scarcity of 350/TH400 shafts & the fact that they don't bolt straight in, a better bet would be to get a tailshaft guy to shorten & balance your existing shaft.

Correct again Terry. No point sourcing another one that requires a rebuild and possibly balance when mine is ok in regards to uni joints, yoke etc. I will contact the shops here in WA tomorrow for a quote to get it shortened.

Hey, Just to let you know that Ive got it all sorted out now. Took a measurement from the T400 seal to diff yoke and headed off to Driveshaft Services Aust in Kewdale. Charged me only $180 to shorten and balance, paint the shaft. Top job and funny thing is, it turned out to be 1470mm between centers. You guys were spot on.

Thanks again for your help.
