Gday Guys help and advice please on these 3 cars with 3 different problems in order of age.......but the VL and Vz are my main problem the VC is just my toy/
VC Commodore :-
Wondering how hard it is to convert to an Ecotec V6 and Getrag 5 speed ? I know a VN cross member will bolt in but does the Ecotec bolt to that and will a Getrag 5spd fit in the Tranny tunnel and how hard is it to adapt the tail shaft ?? Any other help and advice appreciated .....
VL Commodore :-
Fuel Gauge....has spasms, sometime will registers the fuel, most time reads empty. Is there any known problems here ? Such as bad earthing ? I have replaced the gauge with another did not solve the problem, Had to do the low pressure pump and done a visual check of sender - a little worn for age but appeared ok. Any testes I can do to isolate the problem , my daughter is stressing .
VZ Commodore :-
2 problems - main one is a intermittent "grinding" that has appeared in the steering on a right hand turn. Sound does not seem to be coming from the rack but from the bottom of the steering column. There use to be a bearing in the bottom of the older Holdens that could wear is this still the case or is there another problem inherent to the VZ ? The other, which is most likely self explanatory, The ABS Fault light comes on when the car starts then turns off , Im sure this means the ABS modual needs replacing correct ? or can this indicate other problems ?
Thank you all on all and any contributions, Cheers Barry |

VC Commodore.
I don't think that the Getrag is a very good box or worth all the work required to fit it. Why not just fit a V6 & auto, or if you really need a car with 3 pedals, fit a T5.
VL Commodore
A faulty fuel sender is a common fault & very simple to check with a cheap analogue multi-meter (the old-fashion one with a needle).
VZ Commodore
There are no common problems in VZ columns, but if it is present regularly enough, then a tech who is familiar with VZs would find it easily. You don't have a faulty ABS unit, this is what they are supposed to do. It is a self checking routine on start-up, it must do this for roadworthy inspection.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

Thank You Dr Terry,
The VC was just food for thought as a ecotec and gatrag became available, I know the VN/P V6 T5 is a pretty easy transfer, just was not sure on the ecotec. Im hoping Im not to old for 3 pedals yet ;-)
The VL I will have to get an old school analogue meter now, can you give me a run down on what I need to do ? Iv been lazy only use digital.......
The VZ I have been informed tonight is getting worse so maybe able to get a better listen to it and get a better diagnosis , Tracking someone down in Bundy thats decent may prove another problem.....

If the VC is a toy, i'd simply buy a whole 5 litre manual VN-VR. Heaps easier fitment, and basically bolts in. Just needs an EFI fuel tank (I think VS fits, but a VK EFI one would work) and a bit of wiring. Much better car than a V6 one and given how light the VC is will be pretty good on fuel. |

Yes a 5lt is also food for thought, I was initially considering a V6 on the grounds of registration here in QLD as the car was my daily drive and they go on the number of cylinder and a V8 is $1,200 a year. But taking it off the road and club rego opens up new ideas , Thanks Hk1837 may have to start hunting around now .......

Can't help with the first two, but is there something fouling on the steering shaft on the VZ?
All I can come up with. |
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right. |

Thanks for the help with the VZ, the noise had increased according to my daughter, so I confiscated My eldest daughters car (no easy task as Im sure most of you would know)for the day and drove it to work. Nearly got to work with out a miss hap and thought here we go Murphy's law nothing is going to present its self, pulled into the drive way and the grinding started and had increased. The sound I thought was coming from the steering column is now clearly coming from the strut top, unfortunately we live in Bundaberg and after the flood you can imagine what the roads are like may as well do some new shocks while Im at it.
Looks like its going to be the VZ followed by the VL followed by the Mightyboy and if Im lucky I may have some time for the VC...Bloody kids , got to love them. |

Top strut bearings are the issue. VT-VZ were prone for getting small stones/grit etc into the top stut area & the bearings arent sealed or anything - just plastic top & botton with ball bearings inside & the plastic breaks & loses the ball bearings & is often dry. These was a fix bought out that supposedly stopped it - a foam ring - but these deteriorate & allow the foreign matter in there. Allow for two top strut bearings & also buy & replace the strut seals
