My thoughts would be to buy a junker manual steering box from a HQ-WB and use it as to see how well the pitman arm, mounts, line up.
If you're really lucky the pitman arm would swap. You'd want to get that sorted- bump steer issues, etc. From there the chassis mounts & plumbing are fairly easy.
Been a long while since I owned one........ |
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right. |

the pitman arm DOES NOT interchange, you must use the chev pitman arm on the HQ box, you need to get it re-splined to suit as the holden pitman arm is incorrect. its too long and the chamfer on the pitman arm stud different to the chev and you cant tighten it up on the chev drag link, so the drag link will be too close to the x member on that side, and you must weld an adaptor plate to the chassis rall to pick up the top mount hole on the box. the intermediate shaft is also then very close to the top arm if the box is not mounted correctly, the spacing is critical with a swap as such. don't listen to premier 350, he as had way too many 4XXXX over a short period of time..

Thanks for the info we wreck, I am also replacing the original 283 with a big block and want to retain the powerglide and column shift any pitfalls that I should watch out for? Have already upgraded the brakes and want to do the steering before changing over engines. cheers

fat block in an "X" chassis car is ok, pipes are an issue as they tend to want to drop down and curve towards the rear of the car right where the chassis goes, but not a real problem, go with an ally cased glide, linkages are ok from memory with ally glide and BBC, but may need some mods, and make sure you get the steering box right, or else it will be a pig I am helping with a 62 4 door hardtop presently, its has air bags, 300mm rotor conversion, SBC and a tonne of custom touches, oh and HQ steering conversion

Hi there We Wreck, thanks for your response I see Hedman Headers do a set of headers to suit a Big Block into Full size Chevs have you had anything to do with them?
