g,day people , Im trying to put power steer ram on my hg van and have bought a the power ram and now ive found out i dont have the right steering box. Can i use a original v8 steering box or are they the same as all other ones except gts monaros and cars that came out with power steer. And also i dont have a power steer pump bracket. Is it the same as hq hx hj hz etc.

The power steering box is the fast ratio box with a special pitman arm. there would be nothing stopping you fitting the power steering pitman arm to a standard box.

SHould be able to use the pump and mount from an HQ, be careful using differnt pumps and brakets as they sometimes foul.

thanks for your feedback warren, i thought if i used a standard steering box it might be difficult too drive?.Well actually im not sure if i have a standard steering box anyway. Its got different numbers stamped on it. The numbers are J16 12. Do you know what these numbers mean? cheers peter

A standard steering box has a ratio of 20:1, so it's lighter to steer but more turns lock to lock. A power steer steering box is 16.7:1, so heavier to steer and less turns lock to lock. A power steer box has 16.7 stamped on it so you can tell the difference between them. GTS cars had the power steer box but not the power assistance. This makes them hard to steer while parking. You can use your power steering with either steering box, it will just be lighter again with the 20:1 box. If you are thinking of using a small steering wheel, the 20:1 box can be a good option.
The J16 means a manufacture date of September 16th. The "12" doesn't seem right to me. If it said "8" for example, it would be September 16 1968.
There are two pump brackets, one that bolts the pump to the front of the block and one that goes behind the pump to adjust and steady it. I suggest you get the correct brackets if you can.

Using a standard 20:1 ratio for power steering is highly not recommended. It is extremely vague bordering on dangerous.

I have to agree with above but it must be added, the 16:1 power steering setup is vague and bordering on dangerous also.

coxy, now that your thoughts of going with P/S have been shattered, let me add that I have two HK's with P/S and it's not all that bad. Sure it's not as good as a modern with Power Rack & Pinion, but I wouldn't call it dangerous. Then again, it might depend a bit on your application. In my case, with both cars, it's Chev motor with 7" rims and larger, squarer profile tyres. Without the P/S I would need a course of steroids to be able to park & manoeuvre both of them.
Maybe if you're running a 6 cyl with 5" rims and little tyres, P/S might be an overkill. I wouldn't know, haven't gone down that route.
Regarding your second pic, that's the manufacture date, but can't read it in the pic. If it's a 16.7 box, it will be stamped 16.7 on the same surface of the box, but higher up. Your pic doesn't show that.
Getting back to the question of brackets, it depends on your motor. I had Chev in mind with my previous response.

well im getting close to saying stuff the power steer but i will need it. Ive already had the power ram refurbished. Does anyone know or have a spare 16 7.1 steering box?. Im running a worked 253 and the body will be lowered with wide boots. I know i know your saying why not chev it but i bought a doner car for this project that come with all the running gear. I have driven a brougham many years ago with power steer and i remember the steering was very light. So if i use a non powersteer box i imagine the steering will be even lighter which could be dangerous. Has anyone tried this?

If you add some extra castor angle to the front end alignment, say 2 or 3 degrees positive, that will make it steer more like a modern car.

The date stamp looks to read 4C1, making it 4 March 1971.

I love the thrill of holding on for dear life at 70mph in my HG coupe with power steering!

Parking the tank is a dream but driving and a slight twitch on the steering wheel makes your life flash before your eyes!

I find the standard 20.1 steering box easy to steer with V8 and standard steering wheel. The power steering is a good for parking but thats about it.

My HT Brougham is beautiful to drive with the factory power steering & fast ratio steering box, I have a 13" steering wheel and 225/60 front tyres. No issues at all.
I have 245/50 fronts on my 350 HG coupe, the fast ratio steering box and a 14" steering wheel, it is bloody heavy to drive a low speeds.
