Just picked up a VR Acclaim three quick questions and hopefully you can point me in the right direction-
1 ABS light is on on the dash but breaks seem to be working as they should.
2 Engine warning light is also on on the dash but engine seems to run ok
3 Automatic is not kicking down or up fron a standing start bu seem to work ok via the T-bar

Those 3 faults appear to have the speed sensor in common. Does your speedo work.

Yes Dr Terry the speedo is working fine, I am surprised how well the car actually ran considering the above problems. The take off is a little sluggish (unless you pull the T-bar back to 1st) but pulls quiet steadily up to the speed limit (IE 140k's) and ran well along the High way home (approx. 20k's). I did notice when I went to move it later in the afternoon the engine did back fire, just the once, when I first depressed the accelerator, but did not back fire again. Cold start problem ?
The Auto Im starting to think may be solenoid ??
ABS Im a little confused on as I found a receipt from the local Brake and Clutch place showing pad etc have been done ??
I understand you can do a test on the computer for fault codes using a paper clip is this advisable ?

The paper clip thing is not a good idea on VR & later Commodores. It is very basic & won't give you any ABS codes for example.
It's better to get it properly scanned or better still, if you like working on your own cars buy a generic OBDII scanner, they're not expensive. I sell one at work for $165 (incl GST) that is far from basic. You can buy cheaper but you only get what you pay for.
There is a good chance that all 3 faults come down to one common cause or perhaps 2. The fitting of new brake pads won't have anything to do with an ABS code, unless the fitter was a ham-fisted baboon.
Rather than guess at solenoids or whatever, do a little diagnosis first. Compared to a VF, the VR's electronics are very simple.

No kick down could be vacuum unit on trans. The diaphragm breaks and sucks trans fluid into the manifold as well as affecting the kickdown. Check trans fluid levels as well. James. |

VR has the 40L60-E auto, everything is just solenoid operated. No vacuum modulators, vacuum lines or kickdown cables. The fault code causing the check engine light to light up, should be associated the trans shift problem. Dr Terry |

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you have been a little caught up. Got a code scan done from a mate and Dr Terry you are right it turned out to be a crook speed sensor, the the speedo was working but not correctly.
