Buy a Camry? I'd rather drink varnish. No support for automotive white goods from me.

A sad day indeed. Pisses me off too. I dunno if tarifs were a solution, but the govt buying Australian made would go some way.

Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

The ABC reported that our illustrious Prime Minister is about to trade his Holden ministerial car in on a Bimmer. Shows how much those blokes think about manufacturing in Oz.

Our current Prime Minister actually owns & drive a Ford Territory.

The the replacement of ministerial fleet (or the armoured car part anyway) has been put out to tender & Holden didn't put in a bid. Several private Australian companies put bids in (based on Holdens & Falcons). Sadly BMW won it. Not Tony's decision.

I like how while Labor was in power, Nissan, Mistubishi & Ford closed down, well that's life. But now, 3 months into Tony's tenure sees Holden close & he gets the blame.

Holden did not put in a tender to supply the cars.

Firstly I will say that I am a slightly left leaning Labor voter however I strongly believe that the current (dead) state of the Australian motor industry is mostly Labors fault with that stupid Button plan of the late 80's.

The other part we can blame every single person who has chosen to buy an imported new car in preference to an Aussie built car but the lowering of tariffs forms part of that decision.

Same with Quantas. If it were still government owned it would not be in it's current terrible state. Bank fees are another: if CBA were still government owned we would not be living with such high bank fees.

Telstra and it's mass sacking of employees over the last couple of decades we can directly blame the Liberals for.

GM should show Australia some respect and kill the Holden name and merely import Chevrolet Volts, Daewoo Captiva's etc instead of selling "pretend Holdens".

I sold my Capri a couple of months ago. Partly because of the lack of space for such an incomplete project and partly due to my disgust at Ford.

I was looking for a Torana Hatch and considering other model early Holdens but now I'm reconsidering that too.

The only thing left to do is give GM, Ford, Mitsubishi and Nissan the backlash that they deserve after 2017 and buy BMW's, Subaru's Mazdas etc.

I hope those blaming people who buy imported cars have nothing in their possession made in China.
I also find it hard to follow the passion for Holden when they are American owned and funded by us the tax payer, but no such support is ever shown for farmers who compete in an equally unfair market and have no tax payer support at all. Yet everyone eats, only a small few drive a Holden.

I for one buy Australian wherever I can & that includes my clothes & food. It's often not possible to buy anything other than a Chinese product due to successive Australian governments doing nothing to save any of our industries.

What will happen once all of our manufacturing is dead? The economy will be good because all of the mining which employs very few people compared to value adding via manufacturing and no one will have a job but the economy will be good.

...obviously there has been a confluence of events that have conspired to make happen what we see now...(the perfect storm scenario)....

...another angle on all of this is a demographic one....we have healthy immigration from some quite wealthy individuals and families, and THEIR preference for what they drive/drove "back home" cannot be disputed....so they might tend to buy European or Asian manufactured cars that they loved and felt comfortable with.....this aspect could add up to quite some amount of vehicle purchases through the course of any given year due to our strong immigration...

....also, i personally have had a healthy diet of Holdens, Fords, a Valiant Safari wagon and a fully imported 1985 Toyota Supra in amongst other bits and pieces in 35 years of motoring (my daily drive is a 500,000 K EL Falcon wagon!)....but what did i buy the wife a couple of years ago?...a very lovely 5 year old Mercedes Benz CLS 500...WHY?...why not, and this is the rub....there is nothing wrong with trying out something different and this may be something that has resonated with a lot of people like myself....a demographic issue bought about by the desire for "something a little different".....cheers fellas

Voluntary separation package = I can choose to take a package when they get offered.
If they get the numbers that they are after.
If they don't then it becomes Involuntary Separation where they tap you on the shoulder and "you are no longer required" and get walked out on the spot.
There will be a lot of sh1t fighting between unions and GM in the next couple of years with the EBA contracts where GM will try to play
the "you might think about taking this package now because the next package "may" be less of a payout"

The Lima declaration of 1975. Anyone heard of it? Snippet here:

What is the Lima Declaration?

Although originating from 1975, the Lima Declaration has had far reaching effects and can clearly be seen as the blueprint for the disastrous policies embracing the bizarre philosophy known as Globalisation.

The Second General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) met in Lima, Peru, during the period March 12-26 1975 and the resulting declaration had disastrous ramifications for Australian industry. The basic reasoning behind the declaration was the drastic plight of the Third World was the result of the rapacious policies of the advanced industrial nations Australia listed as one of these. The only way to rectify the situation was to transfer industrial resources from the advanced to the Third World, then to provide markets for Third World exports by buying products once produced locally.

Lots of information on Google.

I don't necessarily agree with this line of thinking, but a lot of my friends in Aus moved away from Holdens because they felt the brand became associated with hoons or bogans as they are sometimes known.
Maybe middle Australia wasn't comfortable with the brand image anymore.

This will not change at all as the Holden name will simply be used on re badged foreign cars just like the name Vauxhall is these days.

So Holden as a brand will go backwards not improve by them becoming an importing scab.
