G'Day, I have just fitted a Muncie with a Hurst Shifter to my HQ but as this came from the US it is biased towards the passenger side. I expected this and assume it must be relatively common so I am interested to hear what other people have done to help with this. I assume you can't buy a new Hurst gear stick that bends to the right so has anyone tried bending the original stick to the right. If so did it work ok?

Thanks

Dwayne

Some people use cylindrical spacers for the Indy type. There is a Speco shifter available that has the stick in the centre like the HQ shifter. I used one of these in my L34 but the original tunnel hole didn't have enough clearance. If you want to bend the oririginal stick it would be difficult.

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

Thats a great question..I am in the same predicament...
What are they made of and can they be heated to help in the bend?
I know the HQ 350 muncie and the race A9X T10 had a special Hurst shifter lever but they are expensive if you can find one!

Thanks for the replies fellas, I had a look around and found a Hurst stick diagram here:

http://hurst-shifters.co...uploads/StickDiagram.pdf

There looks to be a straight stick with a right hand bend and was wondering if when mounting it you also put a spacer in with longer bolts to push it over further. I am also unsure about the straight stick being to far forward but it might do the trick, don't know about the reference to certain shifters though as to whether it will cause a problem or not.

i had an absolute ball around 35 years ago going to Preston Motors spare parts counter in Keilor Road Niddrie every Saturday morning and buying or ordering every bracket, bit and piece including the console with bulge, and Hurst shifter for my '71 coupe.....even the four speed shift decal!!

...the plan was to convert my HQ GTS350 from the TH auto to the Muncie rock crusher manual....utilising the original mechanical clutch gear arrangement...

....not too sure if it was common sense prevailing, but the conversion never happened and still very proud to be in the possession of all the boxes, packets, and envelopes with all of these brand new individual items within, for what was considered at the time....a genuine 'nth degree conversion.....

...the Muncie was the last thing required as there were a few with the 31 spline output shaft coming up for sale from time to time, but now i find myself a bit horrified at the prices these things command....oh well!....

....i'll try to post a pic of the "shapely" Hurst shifter and HQ gear knob......cheers fellas

I cut the flange off the shifter and welded a flat plate to it,drilled and tapped the plate, then made a matching plate with a round stick welded to it so it bolts on and brings the stick up in the centre of the console, similar to a hktg shifter.
there is a guy who sells hq stuff at swap meets Greg Thackray,he was doing reproduction hq hurst shifters and sticks

Thanks for the photos high voltage very helpful mate. I sat the console in place and it looks like the gear stick is too far forward as well. It may be worth making my own gear stick up (bent to the right and back a bit) then get it chromed, do you think this would affect the Hurst shifter operation? Has anyone had a crack at making their own gear stick?
