I just had a discussion with Ben. Our most plausible explanation for the 60 trims in GTS runs like this. Note GMH used successive letters as they used them so the progression is V, W (Belmont), X, Y, Z, A, B.
60V we know is chamois/covert. 60X is chamois/covert with Ranier cloth insert (black and white herringbone). 60Y is chamois/covert with Raydo cloth insert. 60Z (back to this is a minute). 60A we know is chamois/black. 60B is chamois/black with Chevron cloth (and black carpet).
Ben has never recorded a 60Z car, but has 60Y from 11/74 through to 6/76 in HJ which is very odd as 60Y if it didn't change should stop around 3/76 when the LX trims started to be used in HJ (so the covert was replaced with black so 60V was replaced with 60A). Given that 60Z has to have been issued before 60A my GUESS is GMH issued a new trim code of 60Z which has to be a chamois/covert trim. 60Z is listed as the same seat covers as 60B so to me that means 60Z is Chamois/Covert with Chevron inserts and as it is a chamois/covert trim would only have lasted until about 3/76. Brad Hanrahan's SLR5000 is a 60Y with Chevron (and Covert Carpet) but earlier cars with 60Y were Raydo inserts, it is 10/75 which is when LX limited production kicked off. So maybe 60Y changed at this time to the new LX chamois/black with Chevron inserts and covert carpet which would explain why Brad's car has a black dash and column and also why Ben has 60Y cars recorded right up until the end of HJ when it should have stopped at 3/76. This explanation should mean the only difference between 60Y and 60B is Y has covert carpet and B has black carpet (plus maybe a few other minor items with the covert-black difference). |

Im now leaning towards the 60Y in HJ GTS being Chamois/covert with chamois raydo inserts. 60B in HJ GTS would be Chamois/black with chevron inserts. This makes sense as the later HJ GTS models were black dash/carpet and it must of followed on to the HX GTS as these were also 60B and same trim combo. My HJ is a 01/75 built so it makes more sense that mine is with the raydo cloth. 60X im still not 100%. Now that this is probably sorted where can I get my hands on some Chamois raydo cloth? and some covert golf ball vinyl for my door trims? If anyone can help, please email me on [email protected]

For a 1/75 HJ I agree with you, it is the later 60Y that is puzzling as afaik it cannot continue as Chamois/Covert past around 3/76 so must have changed.
It don't know if it is actually Chamois Raydo, or just B&W Raydo (called black and flax raydo in HQ). Norm calls it Chamois 52.
60B in HX is definitely Chamois/Black with chamois Chevron inserts - I have this in colour/trim album and have samples for the Chevron trim. I just need the same paperwork for later HJ to show it was the same. LX from early 1976 is the same for 60B so it follows HJ would be too.
60X has to be Ranier, as 18X and other X trims at this time are Ranier. |

I just did some more research, the jist of which is as below.
60Y does not appear in the LH Torana parts catalogue dated 9/75, only 60V and 60X which are respectively Chamois Covert and Chamois/Covert with Ranier insert. So i'll bet that 60Y was first introduced in LH Torana at LX production start in 10/75 and it was Chamois/Covert with chamois Chevron inserts. The dash is black rather than Covert on an SLR5000 which explains Brad Hanrahan's 60Y 10/75 car being like it is. I also reckon 60Y changed at the same time in HJ from Raydo to Chevron.
I found out what causes 60Z and 60B to be different although they are both chamois Chevron inserts. If you look in the late HJ parts catalogue there are 2 x different 60 trim door trims (using coupe as example):
9930526/7DV - 60V, 60X, 60Y and 60Z. 9930526/7EY - 60A and 60B.
The DV uses covert 319 inserts in the door trims, EY uses chamois 319 inserts in the door trims (which is as per HX ie chamois 319).
So it is a distinct possibility that 60Z was introduced in HJ to replace 60Y around the same time 60Y was introduced in LH Torana. So 60Y and 60Z were to be the same thing except 60Y was Raydo and 60Z was Chevron. Possibly as 60Y was then used in Torana in late 1975 with Chevron inserts GMH simply decided to change the spec for HJ 60Y from Raydo to Chevron to align with Torana and not use the 60Z code. However this does not explain why 60Y continues until the end of HJ. The key will be finding an original post 3/76 HJ GTS with 60Y trim and seeing what it is, even without inserts to see what makes it different to 60B.

I know another guy with a HJ GTS 60Y trim built 11/75 and his dash and carpet are both black but they were probably changed at same stage. If mine is 60Y trim then my door trims should be chamois with covert golf ball vinyl, covert carpet and covert dash? is this correct

That is how I understand it to be. I'm hoping a contact of Norm Darwin's comes back to me and has a colour/trim album for HJ so we will know for certain what your insert is, but you have the rest nailed as it is how it shows in the front of the HJ parts catalogue (although no insert detail is given). |
