hi

I have a series II VP Calais which was in storage for over a decade with the same fuel in it and the inside of the tank is cactus and the pump/sender unit needs replacing.

A secondhand tank and sender is the obvious choice, however, a friend mentioned POR-15 to clean and seal the tank. Has anyone used this product or know any issues?

Alternatively if I was to go the secondhand route, am I restricted to VP-VS IRS fuel tanks or will a VN-VS live axle tank fit?

My preference of course would be for a nos one (and sender) so if anyone has one they'd like to part with for the right $$$$ ...

cheers, Franklin

There's no difference in the tanks as far as IRS or live axle - the only thing with IRS is the strap on the left side has a different end on it where it hooks in near the diff.

However, the tanks had many variations from VN-VS, including:
63L standard V6, and 85L (dropping to 80L) long range options (common on V8) for sedans in VN.
The long range tank dropped in capacity again during VR, to 73L, and this was fitted to all VR/VS statesman/caprice models, and most of the V8s.

The return pipe changes from early to later VN-VS tanks, as does the wiring connector, and the pump layout, so if you source another tank, either get one from the same era as your car, or get the plugs from the donor car as well, so you can splice them in.

The straps for the different capacity tanks are different, so grab the straps from whatever the donor car is (try to stick with IRS, so you get the IRS strap).
Cheers,

Mick

Oh, I assume you'd be looking for something closer than Melbourne?

hi Utiliy8
Apologies for delayed reply (have been away) and I've managed to pick up a very good secondhand tank today, but if there was a NOS series II tank in Melbourne, I'd happily have it couriered.
cheers, franklin

Oh, by the way the tank that I got was from a 1992 series I VP. The return line goes to the tank, low and on the driver's side whereas the original tank had it integrated into the sender unit. Guessing that this won't cause any issues as I'll just run a longer hose over to this inlet on the tank.
