I just brought a VS wagon with no reverse and 1st gear only...

I assumed it was a solenoid problem, but my diagnostic computer shows no fault codes.

the oil level is good, and very clean.

the car has no engine warning light

it will not shift manually 1,2,3 and number 12 fuse is OK.

Any ideas? I don't want to change the gearbox just yet and maybe have the same problem

That's the PCM telling it to stay in low gear.

"Command" is a direction from the PCM to the solenoid pack in the box to select the relevant gear - it should normally follow the gear lever selection for 1-2-3-D, but also works on feedback from various sensors, and has the capability to over-ride your mechanical gear selection electronically.

Sounds like it's working around an internal problem or a faulty sensor telling it to stay in low.

A no power fault, or a total loss of communication will result in them staying in 3rd gear, not low, so it's an error somewhere....
Cheers,

Mick
