Starting from 4 wheel drums. Im thinking of hz girlock calipers, discs and stubs, big booster as used on monaros, fitting a nine inch so hq pattern on the rear. Can i reuse the hg backing plates and drum internals and replace drums with new hq? What master cylinder and do i need proportioning or residual valves? what wheel cylinder size?
Thanks

HZ caliper, disc & stubs are a good start. I'd use the HZ master cylinder & booster. Yes you'll need the proportioning valve.
Ideally you'd get it all from one donor car.

Residual valve will be built into the master cylinder, as long as its disc/drum one.

Wheel cylinder size? I'd start at the HZ rear drum size, not sure what that was.

My bad. Didn't realise you were talking about a HG.
Not sure if the Z stubs will fit, others here can confirm.

I should stop drinking/read more throughly.

Keep it simple.

Fit the HZ front stubs, calipers & disc rotors, after swapping left to right, but retain the original HG steering arms

The larger (double diaphragm) HK/T/G booster is fitted to any model with front discs, not just Monaros. That booster & its matching master cylinder will do the job fine & it bolts straight on.

The HK/T/G drums & backing plates have a unique (larger) offset, so you need the keep them, if you're still using HK/T/G axles. Drilling out the old drums to match the re-studded axle flanges is an easy job.

As far as proportioning goes, most HK/T/G 4 wheel drum cars have the same rear cylinders as all HQs (7/8"). Either keep the old rear shoes & cylinders & fit an HQ proportioning valve or fit HK/T/G (disc brake) rear cylinders & matching shoes, then you won't need any valve.

Terry, are you sure HK-HG rear drums are different to HQ-WB? They look and measure damn close to identical bar centre bore and stud pattern. I've even used HK-HG drums to replace HQ ones on a Torana when I busted an L34 axle and just stuck UC drum brakes axles in with HK-HG drums to get it mobile again.

As an aside, with a 9" you can actually leave Ford ends on the diff and use Ford backing plates. If you use the Ford backing plates with the narrower shoes HQ-WB drums will go straight on once the stud pattern and centre bore are modified on the Ford axles. If you use the Ford backing plates with the wider shoes you can use HQ front drums which are wider as HQ front drums shoes are the same width as the big Ford rears.

There is only a small difference in offset between the HK/T/G drums & the HQ/J/X/Z drums. Most of the axle difference is taken up in the backing plate.

I've always just re-drilled stud holes the HK drums, it's much easier than boring out the centre hole to make them fit.

It's also best to check with the certifying engineer, many don't like re-drilling so close to the edge of the axle flange.
