Hi all,
Am restoring a November built HKGTS Monaro 327 @ Pagewood to as close to factory specs as i can etc....
My tailshaft has been reco'd & i am about to repaint - Anyone no what colour or paint codes for the darkish green that was used back in the day?
Thanks.....

The tailshaft on Pagewood 327 was violet. I can vaguely remember seeing some writings on the difference between the violet and green tailshafts, but can't remember where that was. Anyway, there was still a bit of the violet on the tailshaft so I ended up getting a can of White Knight "Squirts" in Violet from Bunnings, which looked a lot like the bit of violet on the shaft. It's been painted with that for quite a few years now and, so far, no one has picked that it might be the wrong shade of violet.

Violet shaft was a replacement/recall and is 3" rather than the 2.75 of the green shaft.

Hi just recall reading about these tailshafts failing. The following is a Reference from Australian Muscle Car issue 51 - the Monaro HG GTS 350 second type with manual transmission. Orange tail shaft installed to address ongoing weaknesses with the previous violet and dark green shafts. The new shaft had larger front yoke and uni joints front and rear. In reality it should have been included in all Monaro 81837 versions from the beginning. In service the new orange shaft would go onto replace the previous violet and dark green units as installed in an 81837 with manual transmission.
So is it possible that the orange shafts could have retrofitted as a warranty campaign to HK and HT models as well?

Thanks Guys,
Will paint my original tailshaft in a tinted down british raceing green for starters & see how close that looks?
My original tailshaft was in pretty good nick & just needed a balance & new uni's etc.....
Must have been a good one or had easy drivng?
Cheers.....

...i'm not real sure about the veracity of the orange tailshafts as my 1971 HQ GTS350 has the purple one... ...it is quite a large diameter shaft with big uni's...i thought possibly a little bigger than 3" ??...so much so that an engine rebuild and tune firm had never seen such a beast....or the size of the radiator for that matter!... ...i believe the "Rockcrusher" Muncie with fine spline (same as TH400) was being used in the HQ 350's...and these cars weren't exactly of an age whereby they were being modded or rebuilt too much in 1979....that may explain the tailshaft colour....and also their surprise ?? ...i made a bit of a mess of my post last night so i'll try again... ...it was purchased by myself in 1979...probably around the same time a lot of young blokes were getting into these HQ coupes... ...the violet tailshaft was just a curiosity to me at 19 years of age, but a couple of years later an ol' mate told me of a Bathurst driver witnessing a HT/G 350 getting somewhat airborne and telling "all i could see was the purple tailshaft"!... ...my car has the TH 400 and i believe the output shaft is 31 spline as is the Muncie Rockcrusher....cheers fellas Edited by user Wednesday, 2 July 2014 5:50:52 AM(UTC)
