Just doing some homework to piece together a 308N engine I have here. Looking for the right rocker covers.

Parts catalogues suggest the LH one on HT-HG 253/308 and HQ 253/308 pre ADR27 are the same thing, ie 1 x solid line down the middle and I think 2 x harness retaining clips on the inside next to the valley cover. This looks to be the case in photos I have in Gregory's manuals and old sales brochure photos. (I think once Torana V8 came around the rocker covers changed to those with pressings ready to have the oil filler in multiple locations). Can anyone confirm this ie HT-1972-ish HQ LH are the same?

Now the RH one is obviously unique to HT-HG as HQ had the oil filler in the RH rocker cover. It is listed as a different p/n to the LH one. Can anyone confirm this side is also a straight line down the middle with no prsssings for oil filler cap? I assume the different p/n is solely due to the absence of the harness retainer clips on the inside? I can't find a decent photo of this side of an original engine.

My 5/71 HG has it's original rocker covers. Has oil cap pressings both sides but no hole as on HQ. Oil cap pressing drivers side to the front, passenger side to the rear. Has ridge both sides. 2 clips as you described, passenger side, intake manifold side. I believe HT's rocker covers did not have the oil cap pressings.

I was just thinking, it may not be all HG with the oil cap pressings. Yours is 5/71 which would be well into at least limited HQ production, possibly into volume HQ production so it makes sense for the covers to have changed by that time. I'll do some chasing.

Yes bit of a mixed bag by the looks of it. A friends late 1970 HG is the same except the cap pressing on both sides is to the front. Mine is pressing to the front, drivers side, passenger side pressing to the rear which seems strange but it's not the only one I have seen like this.
HT didn't have the pressings.
I have many HT and HG V8 engine bay pics of different cars I could email you. To hard to work out how to post pics on here.

My HG 253 had the oil filler on the front of the timing casting and the rocker covers were that one had the PCV coming out from the back and that's all, I think it was the driver side one that had the PCV and the two clips for the wires to run down.
People had to go to the HQ type rocker cover if the old HT-G water pump cover was replaced due to it's corrosion or what ever.

HQ type driver side must have the pressing for the cap to sit on flush and they have a pressing for such like on the left but I think the HG just has a line running straight down.
1974 on I think you get pressings both front and back of both covers but I think the PCV is in the front driver side from then on.

Yes Castellan, mine has the oil filler on front of timing casting. What we are talking about is on HG rocker covers you can see the round impression (but no hole as yet) for the upcoming HQ style oil filler.

That's what I am on about.
The oil filer breather hole ( or the impression )is not on the HG at all.
The impressions are there so as the oil cap can be set any where on the later models by holden but I have never seen such before the HQ came out and yes the late HG may have like you say but they never did in the HT and early HG I am sure.
The drivers side has no holes at all and all HT-G have a PCV hole at the rear passenger side with clips for wires.

Your impression is on the front driver side and the rear of the passenger side with a PCV hole at the rear passenger side ?

I do believe my dads mate must of had a very early HQ 253 with the old HG type oil filler breather and I remember seeing that back in 1973 because it was before the Brisbane flood it was a gold kinsgwood with wheel trims automatic on the tree tan type of trim and he was one of those people who could not keep his foot still on the highway he would always be on or off the gas and I remember it like it was yesterday.

To be honest Castellan, I havnt seen a HG without the impressions and I havnt seen a HT with them. Talking about original unmessed with cars. I believe there was a clear change made from HT to HG model but as usual Someone may prove me wrong..
Yes PVC very back passenger side.
