Have put disks on the hk holden I have and have bought the wheel cylinders to suit. I have been told that the shoes are also different as the piston in the cylinder now acts as the rod that would normally push the piston in. Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. The rear shoes have no notch where the rear cylinders operate them, on disc brake cars. They are different to those on 4 wheel drum brake cars.

It is like this on HD/HR/HK/HT/HG & LC/LJ 6, with front discs.
