with the 202 black carby motor in the vk the vacuum line from the egr is not connected to anything and there is another stray vacuum line coming from near it on the base of the carby that doesn't seem to be connected to anything.
on the left side of the head about half way along there is the remains of what appears to be a sensor or sender the top is broken off. could this be the destination of the egr line? and what would the other line be?
the car runs and starts ok, though idles a bit rough as if a spark plug is on the way out, could this be related?
thanks

I'm going on memories of 30 years ago. So "actual results may vary"
That sensor could be a TVS (thermal vacuum switch). From memory, the EGR was disabled when the engine was cold.

Either way if you've got a vacuum leak, that would affect the idle.
A broken 'switch/sender' and a vac line going nowhere aren't going to do the idle any favours.

Have you tried plugging the open vac lines? Most mechanics of my era kept a supply of balls from old bearings to plug vac lines to EGR valves.

Just about time for a set of workshop manuals I think. They will have most of the answers you seek. Some simple questions can have very complex answers, especially on the emissions plumbing.

cheers

Premier350 is on the money also. The vacuum hose off the EGR goes to a TVS, but the TVS is in the head near the carb. Then a vacuum hose off the TVS to the side of the carb. Don't know if your EGR has one or two vacuum outlets. If one, it would be off the top of the EGR. If two, there will be one off the top and one off the base of the EGR. If there are two, they both come together into a ASM modulating valve, then into the TVS in the head. All this info is shown in the parts catalogue that I mentioned in my earlier reply.

Thanks guys. for information, I have blocked off the vacuum line. there is one line coming off the top of the egr, the second is just near the egr but on the base of the carby. I would point out the sensor/sender thingy is right near the centre inlet manifold, there is another one with a green top near the front of the head, that is ok.
There is a valve thing I presume that is the asm, near the egr, mounted at the same mounting point.
There are also 2 small vacuum lines joind with a 3 way adapter there is no line to the third point on the adapter and no apparent place for it to come from have to block that off, although it is small I expect it will have some effect on the idling. I would put up a pic but I don't know how to on here.
I will look at getting a parts manual as I intend to keep this one, I do have the factory shop manual but it's not with me at the moment.
Just for laughs on the way up north the other day the rear oil seal on the gearbox extension (traumatic)blew out so now I am trailing ATF everywhere and carrying a stockpile of it till I get back to the big city where I can jack it up and fix it.(praying all the way that I don't run into the dreaded roadside rta check).
Ah the joys of motoring. The car itself drives very nicely although it is quite different to the VR, the ride is different and it goes around bends differently. Will have to get the cruise control though, as recommended further back on here will go for an aftermarket one, and fit a remotoe immobilser system the jack point one drives me insane.

Blue 6s also have them. V8 ones are different.
Cheers,
