A while ago I have a diff rebuilt for my VY SS ute which had 4.11 gears and a shimmed LSD. I put in synthetic oil and it always suffered from diff chatter. Due to the noise, I put in an additive which only fixed the problem temporary. While not the one to blame the diff rebuilder, I decided to try another brand of oil. Like any oil, I went for a drive to warm up the diff and while draining it I was noticed how bad the oil was; flothy and resembling of grey metallic paint... quite shocking considering it was only in there for 3000 kays.  Since changing to a Castrol oil there is not a sign of diff chatter or clunking, unlike the trouble I had with the Penrite oil. While I'm disappointed with the Penrite oil (and certainly not the one to bag brands without find the cause) but what would cause the oil to be in such bad condition after a short amount of time? Are you sure you had the right oil to suit LSD diff? The fact that it shuddered seams to me no? and now its ok. Did you use penrite gear oil 80w90?

I used Pro-Gear Full Synthetic 80W-140; it was recommended by Repco on their touch screen catalogues.

You have a few things going on there. Repco advised on the oil and then you put an additive in as well. Guessing one or both were not compatible.

Penrite normally makes good oil. Check their Web site for the technical information on their synthetic LSD and gearbox oil You will note they specifically recommend NOT using additives. Good oil, be it gearbox, diff or engine, shouldn't need additives, or any other form of snake oil. All claims by salesmen to the contrary should be ignored!

Looks normal for a LSD to me.
Open wheelers are clean for years.
Get a proper magnet for the job and put it on the main caps.
