Was doing the first oil change on the 3.3 VK and have discovered the sump plug hole has been stripped and bodgied up with a thread insert replacement thing which is now not working.
I believe there was a kit put out that retapped the hole to a larger one and used a larger sump plug.
Ringing around gets me nowhere, its too old for the usual parts places.
Has anyone got one of these kits or even have the oversize tap left over from doing the job himself?
Will beg borrow or buy.
And out of interest what thread would it be? I may have the tap in my tool kit. But then I have to find a new plug.
Don't really want to pull the sump I do have another one but but it's a lot of work and it leaves my spare motor without a sump.
Anyway is it possible to remove/replace the sump in situ?

thanks

I believe VK sump plugs are 1/2" 20TPI Unf. Supercheap has 14mm sump plugs, which would be the next logical size. I don't know if there is enough meat in the boss on the sump to take it out that far though.
You would to drill and tap to open it up to 14mm.

located a supplier of replacement plugs, they apparently drill and cut new thread as you screw them in so no need to predrill and tap. about $15.

the selftapping plug turned out to not be right, but bought a 14mmx20tpi and rented a thread tap from the shop for about $18 the lot, took about 10 minutes and was on my way.

Good news. I hope you got the swarf out easily.
Was it really M14 x 20TPI, or was it M14 x 1.25mm? There is only a slight difference (20 TPI = 1.27mm pitch), but I've never heard of a mixed metric/imperial thread like that before.

Thanks.
to be honest I never took that much notice. Pretty sure it was a 14mm x 1.25 tap, the plug was what the shop sold me, when you think about it as long as the plug is tight and doesn't leak it doesn't really matter. It screwed in o.k..
I put lots of thick axle grease into the flutes of the tap to pick up swarf think i got it all.
I rented the tap I was going to buy a new one but the price was a bit off putting for something I was probably only ever going to use once, $55, so $10 rental for 10 minutes was fair enough.
