Hi all, happy new year.

Have decided to embark on the HJ caprice resto for better or worse. I have some questions:

1. Fuel tank - is the HJ Statesman fuel tank different to the sedans? I had in my head they would be due to the longer tail on the car, and would have a longer fill tube (filler cap is behind the number plate).

2. Does anyone know of a vinyl roof (exterior) fitter in Melbourne Metro?

3. Failing answer to number two, what would be the approximate price to get a new vinyl roof fitted?

4. I fitted new body-to-chassis rubbers about 2 years ago (required by the guy who gave me a roadworthy assessment). It's been under cover since then, however some of the rubbers have badly (and I mean badly) cracked again. They can't be over-tightened, as there is a metal tube down the middle that dictates how far you need to do them up. Is this just a rubber quality issue, or something to do with the fact it's been immobile since fitting them?

Thanks all.

I think the tank is different, can't remember how. There will be 2 x different HJ Statesman tanks too I think: 1974 (vented no canister) and 1975-6 (sealed with canister).

Longer neck on the filler is the only difference. As above with HK re the vents/no vents.

If the tube goes all the way through the rubber and you tighten the bolt until the tube is pushed hard against each side its no point having the rubber as the whole thing will act as a solid item. I think you have over tightened them causing the rubber to split prematurely.
The tube should be on the bolt head side to protect the rubber from the bolt shaft and the rubber should sit flat on the mounting surface.
IMHO

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

The rubber is to insulate the chassis vibrations from the body. I'd say the quality of the rubber is at fault.

make sure you have clean hands (free from engine oil and grease) when handling the rubbers..

there is a product you can coat the rubbers in to protect them , looks like vasaline to handle...
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.
