Does anyone know any history behind the bare VK shell sold at the jagparts auction in the early 1990's?
I currently own this shell and am trying to chase any history about it.
The V8 Sleuth Aaron is also trying to find out information for me about my shell so any information can be directed to myself here or Aaron at his website.
It was advertised in the jagparts catologue as an ex VK HDT race shell and was sitting outside on day of the auction.
It says " HDT Comm 8 " which is clearly visible on the inner side of driver side strut tower and a VK chassis number on the top of passenger side strut tower. It is one of about 50 VK GMP and A race shells made and has extra spot welds and seam welding every few inches along the seams in certain spots so definitely a race prepared shell and was used as it was damaged.
It has been converted to VL with all panels to look like a VL but was a VK chassis and probably one of the first 1985 spec VK Group A race shells going by the very late 1984 chassis number and lack of captive blind nuts in the pillars. VK Group C used blind nuts in the pillars for bolt and welded in cage, Group A used NO blind captive nuts as GROUP A used an all welded in cage so this chassis would be one of those.
The car has had a big hit at some stage mainly to the passenger side front.
The car still shows signs of having been bent in its early life by the extensive repairs to chassis rail, skirts etc etc and has been updated from VK to VL spec and was then turned into a road car in the late 1990's.
It was purchased from the jagparts auction as a bent bare shell by a NSW buyer and then i bought it out of NSW from him.
Any help with its origins would be appreciated, how it got bent? When? And who raced it and or for which team?
Thanks.

Time frame & smash location sounds like the Brock/Moffat VK that Moff put into the wall on Skyline at Bathurst (1986) during Friday practice.

Has that particular car been accounted for ?

Hi Dr Terry,

I have read the Moffat car was repaired and raced then written off a couple of years later.
From what i have read on the Internet the smashed Moffat VK is believed to be chassis number 14 but i think chassis number 14 would be too late for this car as it should be between numbers 8 - 11 going by the 84 Bathurst cars being 6 and 7 so you would think the 85 - 86 cars would be 8 - 11.
My shell is probably the first 1985 spec group a shell as it has no captive nuts for the roll cage and yet is a AVK 0343## prefix chassis number which would make it extremely late 1984 or start of 1985 shell so maybe first of 1985 GMP and A Group A race shells.
What do you think?
Is it possible the Moffat VK was chassis number 8 and it was stripped and rebuild using a new chassis? Thus becoming chassis number 14. That would fit in to a chassis 14 time frame and with the original damaged written off Moffat shell chassis number 8 being sold off at the jagparts auction with the very bent frontend in the early 90's.
Have you any records relating to HDT chassis number 8 ?
It was advertised in the jagparts catologue as an ex HDT VK Racing shell and being so badly damaged at the front and in the same location would be very hard not to be the Moffat car.
There would be some evidence in Group A history of another VK having had such a hard hit and written off and especially being an ex HDT race shell.
So can anyone tell me what is going on?
Who owns the number 14 and was it re shelled?
And, is my car the original Moffat shell?
Please, can anyone tell me what has gone on here?
There is so much talk and speculation about the HDT cars, is it possible the "Known" chassis 14 Moffat chassis shell is not the original one damaged in 1986 but a replacement shell for number 8. ???

I have just read the first Group A VK was raced by Brock and Perkins in January 1985 in New Zealand. So that would make the chassis number of my car period correct as being a late 1984 shell and the HDT Comm 8 number would also be correct as it would have been the first 1985 spec Group A shell build by HDT after the Group C chassis number 7 Big Banger which was used at Bathurst 1984.
Can anyone else back this theory up or add any info please?

Why do you ask?
I would just prefer not to post full chassis numbers at this point in time. I hope everyone understands why.
Cheers.

Ring CAMS, tell them chassis number and that you are the current owner and they will search their archive.

Hi Balfizar,
Could you please send me a PM with a way of contacting you even by email as you obviously know a great deal more about this chassis than i presumed.
I didn't want to post the chassis full and correct number for fear of someone copying it.
can you please contact me regarding my chassis.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers.

There is nothing about this chassis that I can tell you that CAMS can't and you are better off getting it from them.

...this is a fantastic outcome for 1997 HRT, and with all respect to all the forum members, if Balfizar had chosen to not make that further post, ol' mate may have been left wondering for a long time...which would've been a shame.

...i reckon the idea of not divulging your numbers leaves a bigger chance of someone pinching your cars' provenance than if you broadcast it out there for all the world to know....you only have to date and record your provenance on the interweb, however meagre, for you to properly stake your claim

...just my two cents worth and no offence meant....cheers fellas

Hi Balfizar,
Thanks for the reply.
Do you own the re shell for the log book or just the log book?
Can i please contact you to discuss as the book is of great interest to me as you are probably now aware. I don't want to ggie away too much about my chassis if you can read between the lines and my last couple of posts.
Thank you.

Totally understand where you're coming from mate.
I'm really trying to do the right thing by all the forum readers.
I've just been burnt on two other cars i own and I guess twice bitten 3rd time shy.
Balfizar has blown me away with his chassis number guess and i know of another car with a chassis number in the range and it too was registered but in Vic. Unfortunately i dont know where it is now as it's been out of Rego for a few years.

Yes and my chassis is in the same vicinity.
But Jagparts had a complete race car they were racing, the car i am talking about (my car) was a bare shell with a damaged front with HDT cage . Jagparts actual race car had different strengthening under bonnet.
I think it may have been bought by jagparts from Lansvale but it's so confusing. I know it came from jagparts auction, NSW and was advertised as a VK HDT shell but was it already converted to VL?
I'm going to try calling the guy i bought it from years ago, hopefully he has the same number.
Thanks for posting.

I believe the car i have is the car Moffat crashed into the wall at Bathurst and was then repaired and then once again written off by Garry Scott at Lakeside in 1987.
I am convinced i have the original Moffat shell or remains of it.
I believe my chassis number and other markings prove this.
Jagparts must have got hold of the wreck, this is the main piece of the puzzle I am searching for.
Can anyone explain how jagparts got it?
Cheers.

What are you going to do with it now? Back to original race setup?

G'day,
I am having discussions with the V8 Sleuth atm as to best way to go about things so going to see what he thinks of the chassis.
Would love to return it to 1985 spec but i don't think there is enough left as it's just a body and it's been converted to VL. Complete front clip, rear quarter panels, floor pan, boot floor etc. The structural shell, roof etc is the original VK though.
Really not sure at this stage, might preserve it as is as you can see the evidence of front end damage and repairs and all the rough repairs under paint, welds etc etc.
Any thoughts?
