Hoping to get some help withh some fine detail on the following points regarding the finish/painting of the gear shift levers & shift rods on these gearboxes and also the painting of the rear crossmember:
1. Were any parts of the shift lever mechanism painted and if so I gather it would be black?
2. Were the shift rods left as a bare metal finish (one of the rods on my car look like it was possibly zinc coated) or were they painted black?
3. Was the rear crossmember painted all over or just the base and the upper side left with a reddish/maroon primer on it?
Hoping to attach some photos of thes parts from my car but I think that all of these parts have been pickled when repairs were done & I have since stripped the crossmember to bare metal.

Assuming HT is the same:
1/ The shift levers are an olive/black colour which looks more like an oil finish after heat treatment than paint to me.
2/ The shift rods are zinc plated, as are the gearbox shift tabs.
3/ The cross member is painted all over.

There is some black on the upper surface of your cross member, but I cant tell from your photograph if its under or over the red oxide primer. the usual order is black etch primer over bare metal, red oxide over the etch, body colour overspray, final slush black on the undersides. Being removable, and separately painted, it wouldn't get the body colour overspray.
I've seen elsewhere that HK was done differently in different plants, so the manufacturing location may effect the answer.

gm5735 Appreciate your detailed reply. Seems that the shift levers on the parts I have are as you describe. There is one shift rod that appears to be partly zinc coated so for now I will plan to plate these. I cannot see the tabs on the gear box at the moment but will also plate them later if thats the correct finish.
As for the top of the crossmember I think you are right. I can only guess that the red oxide primer seen in the photos probably didn't come off when the parts were cleaned. There is a lot of it still on the shift lever mechanism support plate and around the hanbrake equaliser pivot point
