Guys

Looking for someone here who has run HQ 14x6 rally rims (GTS rims) on a HK-HG with normal size tyres like 205/70/14 or 215/65/14 (the original HK GTS327 tyre was a D70-14 which sits basically in between these two tyres).

Why I ask is I've been looking at US Pontiac 15x6 rally rims for my HK GTS. They have a 4" backspace, the same as a HQ 14x6 rally rim. I'd be running either 205/65/15 or 215/60/15 which are essentially the same size as the 14" tyres I mentioned.

If anyone here has run the 14x6 ones, do they work OK? Which to me means no scrubbing anywhere. I'll be running stock ride height too.

The standard HK 14x6 rally rim is 119mm backspace, so the HQ ones stick out 19mm further.

The other option I have is to run 15x7 rally rims with a 4.5" (114.3mm) backspace and the same 15" tyres. These rims will have their front face 1.6mm further in than a 14x6 HQ rally rim, and the back face will be 27mm further inwards. This also means the back face will sit in 8mm further than a stock HK 14x6 rim which I know will foul radius rods but this car won't have them.

So that also begs the question, has anyone here successfully run 7" rims on the front of a HK-HG with stock guard lips and no scrubbing?

Had a HK Kingswood many years back which I fitted with 7" rims all round and don't recall knocking the guard lips up. Ran these rims on my Monaro as well and I dont recall knocking the lips up on this car until I fitted 8" rims. I bought the 7" rims (HK style) and tyres new from one of the major tyre outlets and thinking that the tyres were Goodyear Grand Rally, which were a reasonably common at that time. I also picked up another 7" HK rim /tyre and at one time fitted it to the front left hand side of the car (can't remember which car) and it would just scrape the brake caliper when going around sweeping bends at reasonable speeds. Again can't remember if it was to the left or the right.
Still have these 7 rims and am planning to fit them on the Monaro when it is completed.

Thanks Gerard. Can you possibly run a straight edge across the back of the rim and measure the distance from the mounting face to the straight edge? This will allow me to buy the correct backspace rally rims if I get 15x7.

Measured one of the 7" rims and the distance is 126mm. Also measured two of the original 6" rims and they were both 122 mm. Going back to the odd 7" rim I mentioned previously (scraping the caliper) thinking that this must have been a wheel balance weight on the inside of the rim that was touching the outer end of the lower control arm?

So 5" backspace on the 7" rims, make me confident then that a 15x7 with 4.5" backspace will work.

Is it worth getting Ajax to make one up with the sizes you want to use, just to be sure? Unless of course you need 4 or 5 expensive hose reels when they don't fit or rub on everything!
(We used to use bent F5000 rims for coffee table bases - you could try that too)

They have to be proper 15" rims though not 14" centres in a stepped-down hoop or they won't clear the brakes.

I meant for a one off to try the offset and backspace you want, before you buy a whole set. Try these guys, who can do just about anything you need in steel wheels.

Talk to Phil, who knows his stuff.
