Hi fellas .. another ol' mate of mine has a factory 4.2 Litre Holden powered TK Bedford and whilst chatting with him about this jigger he mentioned that the rear engine cover panel bolted to the back of the cab is missing...

...told him I knew of one and would report back to him and in doing so found out this one was a 5.0 Litre banger...with a slight twist to the story....

...his side cover panels have the decal "Holden V8", but the side covers on the one I found had "Heavy Duty V8"...??

...does anyone know of this small detail between the breeds, and was there some profound differences between the two V8 options in these Beddy's ?

Not much different to a blue 308. They were low compression, cast iron water pump, 2 barrel Rochester carby. Can you get me its engine number?

i can't get the engine numbers, suffice to say that they must've had both the 253 and 308 as an option...it's just that the decalling is intriguing and signals a beefier TK with the 308 ?.....

Yes you could option both 4.2 and 5.0L, and both were low compression. These engines debuted the HEI dizzy as well, and both were TH pattern for the Eaton gearbox.

The reason I asked is I haven't yet figured out of these are in the HZ engine number sequence, the original HQ sequence or the VB/WB-VS sequence as I haven't yet found a BS or BV prefixed engine number to tell. It is going to be hard to tell between the HZ or the VB/WB-VS sequence as they pretty much count up the same in this period.

It will start with BS for a Bedford 4.2L. If it is the original see if you can get the cast date too.

Yes the TK Bedfords from the middle of 1979 were powered by Holden V8's, 253 and 308. This ran through till the TK was discontinued in about 1981. The only real customers buying these were government departments as the private sector had wisely moved on to products from Japan. They had hard anodised ring lands, a chrome top ring, valve rotators on the exhaust side, L34 type conrods and a heavy duty timing set. The engine side covers had a decal saying 'Holden Heavy Duty V8'. I have a ex NSW rural fire "M" series 4x4 with the 5.0L. Only the 3-4 tonne KC had the 253, the rest were 5.0L.
