hi all,i`m in the process of fitting a th700 into my HK behind a 350 & i`ve hit a snag with the box bolted to the motor it`s not sitting in the centre of the tunnel,it`s a fair way to the passenger side.i can lever it about 20mm to the driver side,i wouldn`t of thought there would be that much play in the engine mounts.one of the engine mounts busted maybe ? any ideas would be greatly appreciated cheers jason Edited by user Sunday, 3 May 2015 7:14:49 PM(UTC)

Jason, have you checked that the engine mount brackets are around the right way? On HK one engine mount bracket is shorter than the other as the engine, gearbox and tailshaft are offset from the centreline of the car by about that amount. The tunnel is also not on the centreline of the car.

i guess you`re talking about the engine mount spacers for chev into hk ? i have the shorter one on the passenger side
didn`t know about the drive line & tunnel being offset
thanks for the reply

AFAIK all Holdens from 1948 to the VL Commodore have the tailshaft tunnel off-centre. This is because (unlike Ford & Chrysler) GM-H made the 2 rear axle shafts the same length. This places the rear uni yoke off-centre (to the driver's side) because the diff pinion is off-centre to suit the 'centred' diff crown wheel carrier. In my experience, some (not all) Chevs & Pontiacs also did this.
Add to that the fact that GM-H sat the HK-HQ Chev V8s, this time, off to the passenger side, probably to gain some extra firewall or steering box clearance.
As noted, the engine mount adaptors are different lengths, the shorter one being the passenger side. So yes, the engine will sit off-centre in the bay.
Chrysler did a similar thing with Valiant V8s in the engine bay. Next time you see one, check out how far offset their engine is placed. It is quite noticeable.

Far more eloquent than me Terry, as usual. The gearbox mount holes in the gearbox cross member are also, as you would expect, offset to the left hand side by about 12mm.
With the engine offset to the left and the tunnel offset to the right nothing was ever going to be centred.

thank you dr terry & gm5735 for the great explanations
it just had me puzzled as the th350 that came out of the car seemed to be centered in the tunnel
thanks again jason

If the TH350 in question was behind a 308 in an HZ, VB or VC, then the engine & transmission would be centre in the engine bay & trans tunnel. The tailshaft however would be off-centre as you go more towards the diff.
Jason, you began your post with a 350 V8 & TH700 into an HK, where does the TH350 fit in ?

Jason, I think Dr Terrys' question was more like "what was the engine/transmission setup when you had the TH350 in the car?"

In that case, assuming that you've used the original engine mount adaptors as they were, then the transmission's position in the tunnel will not have changed in any way.
Having said that, due to the fact that the TH700 has a differently shaped case & pan, it may appear to have more or less clearance in some areas, compared to the TH350.
