350 chev into hz power steer and sump?

After some issues with my already rebuilt 308 and a $5000 quote to strip check everything and rebuild again Im thinking a 350 crates the easiest option for me. Parts are cheap and readily available to in comparison and its new.
Questions mostly in regards to the power steering. Pretty much everything I find mounts on lh side of the engine. Are there rh power steering kits available or do guys just get long high pressure hoses made? Also where would I find a suitable sump?

Sump is the easy part, US rear hump sumps are dime a dozen here or in the USA. Just ask who sells you the engines.
Mount adapters (as per HQ) are easy to get here too as are extractors to suit most boxes.
Power steer reservoir normally sits on the passenger's side but you can make up a mount for the driver's side just like a HQ-WB 308, even use the stock bracket modified - just have to sort out the spacing from the head to suit the crank pulley.
Radiators are made here too to suit a Chev, make sure you get a 4 row as iron headed SBC's do get warm. |

Thats great advice and a great help thank you. Speaking of cooling hadn't even considered until today running heater hoses? Any problems? And engine fan? I like engine fans as theyre always on as long as the engines running but are thermos considered the way to go?

When I threw the 350 in my HQ, I bought a second hand P/S pump, mounted on the pass side & had some hoses made. Ran them under the engine, secured to the sway bar. I think thats how the factory did it as well. For the pump/brackets, try one of the American engine importers. Odds are they'll have second hand pumps and or brackets. Plenty of US vendors will have the pump you need, if you want a brand new pump. |

Forgot your heater hose question. I used the connection on the water pump and the front one on the intake to fit my heater hoses. Water pump was a stock GM cast iron one.
Can't remember, and the car is long gone which was the inlet & out let though. The factory manuals will have a diagram of how the the hoses were routed, someone here will be able to share it with you. |

I've never been able to get thermo fans to cool an iron headed 350 properly, always used a shroud and viscous clutch fan with 4 or 5 row radiator. I've seen people use AU and similar Falcon setups and they reckon they work but I've always had overheating problems with similar setups. |

Shrouding is the biggest problem with thermo fans. Done well, they are superior to a clutch fan at low rpm/low road speed.
The problem with the EF/AU/VT twin thermos, is they are all far too wide for a HQ-WB or even VB-VS radiator, and they overhang the tanks. The shrouding is terrible, and the air goes everywhere but through the core.
My brother-in-law's 62 Chev is running a 400ci stroked SBC. With a viscous fan running in the standard shroud (which is like 1/2 a 44 gallon drum) he'd had numerous boiling issues at the first summernats he took it to. On the highway & around town when moving >40km/h it was fine, but it couldn't cope with the low rpm cruising, or stop/start traffic.
I put a VS V6 2-speed single thermo fan into the factory shroud, and made sure it all sealed up well with no gaps. It was simply a matter of cutting the plastic VS shroud down enough to be a snug fit in the drum, and 4 tek screws hold it in tightly.
Its shakedown run was that 40+degree new years day we had about a decade ago, and it stayed below 1/2 on the temp gauge when cruising at low road speeds. Most of the time it runs on & off on just the low speed, but on a really hot day (or if he hits the manual over-ride switch) it will run on high speed. He had no cooling issues at the following summernats, but the alternator failed to keep up with the current draw on high speed, eventually shutting him down!
My current favourite is the BF2/FG Falcon big single. Like the VS V6 fan, it's also a 2-speed single fan, but it's a couple of inches bigger, and flows a lot more air. It's around 17 inch in diameter, and it only just fits into a factory viscous clutch fan shroud for a VL-VS Commodore V8, which would be the same or similar size to the viscous fan on a SBC.
I'm running a VS fan on my Brock (5.6L stroker) and it copes well - but again, shrouding is the key - I fibreglassed a cut down VS fan into the factory V8 shroud, for a perfect fit.

Thanks guys. Can I run the clutch fan off the 308 on there or don't they fit? Failing that I can try to somehow mould a thermo into the full shroud Im running now. I have a spare shroud in the shed also.
In regards to heater hoses looked at a few pics in google images of how guys have them set up in the hq. As you said Premier 350. No one seems to run heater taps on them? Surely this just makes your cab hot all the time?

You can us the 308's clutch fan but the 308 shroud doesn't work. I think Rares sell a replica. |

If it is a HQ you'll need the HQ 350 throttle linkage pivot (or modify a V8 one) or convert it to an early HJ pedal and cable.
Original HQ 350 powered vehicle also used the same diff yoke as a 1-tonner (1.125" uni). |

No its in a hz ute so cable already. Already running a 700r4 so hoping shouldn't be any dramas with the gearbox and diff is 10 bolt, lsd with heavy duty axles. Have some 3.55 gears here to replace the 3.08s at some point too. I understand people seem to frown on the strength of the 700r4 and the ten bolt but I wont be out skidding the streets, just my daily driver and crate motors advertised as 290hp so even if thats a true figure shouldnt give the drive train too much of a hard time.
