Hey guys. I have a 83VH. it was running real smooth with a warm motor and was I in park then it suddenly stopped. it's got plenty of fuel and I found a 12 volt light tester. I had a go by clamping on the earth to the motor and the light comes on with the accessories on around the wires onto the coil. but there is no spark coming out of the electronic dizzy to the plugs.
I got some sand paper and gave the rotor a clean and noticed that it was slightly burnt out. I also cleaned the 6 parts around on the inside of the cap and the centre piece too. now I'm stuffed! I'm scratching my head! any ideas?

Symptoms are the same as when an ignition module lets go - sudden cutting out when warm, and no spark.

It's the little black module under the cover on the side of the dizzy.

Replace it with a new one, and it should be good to go.

Hi Mick, that's great news! I thought the entire dizzy would of been stuffed! I will give that a go.

Hello again Mick, sorry if this is a stupid question. but. do I need any special tool to remove this part and to install it?
I hope it's a simple remove and replace?

Only a screwdriver, and a pair of needle-nose pliers helps to remove the 4 terminals.

Make sure you put plenty of heat transfer compound on the base of the new module.
Depending on the replacement, it could come with it already smeared, with a peel-off layer of plastic over it, or as a separate sachet in the box that you need to open & apply.

Distributor gear is known to strip it's teeth on the blue motors also.

Not sure if 6 cylinder is same as blue 253, the coil can just up and die too. Has happened to my WB twice. Replaced modulator thinking it was the problem but it was the coil.

Great feed back guys. I will take it all into consideration.
I will have a play with it if I have time tomorrow (or some day soon) and let you guys know.

some thing to try also BUT DO NOT TRY near carburettor or any petrol source or dampness. Remove dist cap rotate rotor to check teeth on shaft should only turn some 10 degrees only... if good then replace cap then pull center lead (coil to cap) and hold cap end of lead near the engine block 10mm or so. Dont hold the end unless brave.
Turn ignition on (not start) flash coil negative (- terminal) to ground with scrap wire or screwdriver and should be healthy spark from lead to the engine. Check volts present at coil + when flashing to ground, should have same volts when flashed. Flashing should produce a smallish spark at the - terminal. if no 10mm spark check wires to dist module if good replace module in dist as previously stated in posts. coil may be week or if signs of oil or a real bad smell it may be crook too. WARNING: DO NOT flash if any petrol or you suspect petrol spill is present.

Hi hk307, that is some handy information. Thanks! I have removed the Ignition module from the dizzy and will try it in a mates car with the same VH 6cyl etc. I will be making a trip to his house in a week or so and may give that a go too!
