I am looking at ditching the 3 Speed crash box in favour of something better to drive behind the 179 with HR disc front. I am buying a CRS chassis kit and getting the tunnel enlarged and was thinking about going to an auto (t700) after reading the street machine story and some other reviews. I recently drove an EK with a supra box and realised that I would miss the engine braking effect of downshifting if I went Auto and am now considering a manual box. Problem is I have a new bench seat that I want to keep and have heard that the only box to clear this would be an Aussie 4 sp with a bench shift kit. Is this correct or are there other options. Also is the Aussie any good or will it be as whiney and clunky as the 3 speed?

Use the Aussie, but rebuild it first. Use an M22 though, with a 3.08 or 2.78 diff, which effectively gives you an overdrive 3-speed, but 1st gear is still usable. That way you can use the bent floor shifter. The M22 will easily handle your 179. Clutches,

How do you pick an M22?

As I am wanting to put an M22/3.08 combo into my 1 Tonner...

From the ratios, or from the part numbers on the cluster gear or input shaft or third gear. Put it in 1st and count - 3.74:1 for M22, 3.05:1 for M20 and 2.54 for M21. The M22 is only a 6cyl box though you can convert one to a V8 with a V8 3-speed input sh

I thought the m22 had a 2.85:1 first. Is there anywhere on the net where the ratios are available?

The M22 has the same (or close)first gear ratio as an M15 (3-speed). I will be putting some of this info on my website soon, but it's not there yet.

Will an M22 stand up to a stock 253?

Absolutely no difference in strength between an M22, M21 or M20 EXCEPT that dumping the clutch on an M21 with a V8 into a high geared LSD arse end (eg 3.08:1) will probably more likely break an M21 than an M22 simply because more loading is placed onto th

Hi Guys.

I'll have to disagree here, the 1st gear ratio of the M22 box is a super-low 3.74.

Here's a list of 1st gear ratios (GM-H 'Aussie boxes only)

M15 3-sp.....3.07
M20 4-sp.....3.05
M21 4-sp.....2.54
M22 4-sp.....3.74

You're right about the 1st gear on the 3-speed. My memory failed me there. But I wasn't aware of two different ratios on the 3-speed 2nd gear (which co-incidentally is the same as 3rd on an M22) which should be 1.68:1 on all 3-speeds. The only different o

Hi Byron.

It looks like we're both having memory failure. You are correct, it is the 1st gear that differs in the HT V8 M15, not 2nd as I suggested.

When it gets to M21 boxes, there are quite a few variations. There's the regular (V8) M21 box

The VB rally cars were a wierd thing. A lot of the running gear was left over XU-1 stuff. The input shaft was still available new from GMH in the late 80's. A friend of mine had one of the cars until a few years back. I think it was the 4th Holden Dealer
