can any damage be done to a car by accidently starting it with it in gear with no clutch when cold. the car in question is a vx ss

You may also lessen the life of your starter motor, but these normaly wear out mechanically before the windings give out anyway. You could conceivably damage flywheel teeth also.

this method of starting the car in gear has come in hand for me a few times, once when i ran out of fuel and the filler neck was 4 inches off the fence, i had to key the car up the driveway to get access to the filler ....

if it was to do any damage they would have a fitment to stop it starting unless the clutch was engaged.

VZ`s they do , the motor will not turn over unless the clutch is depressed

just for info, in the army drivers courses, we are taught, that if you stall it going up an offroad bank or hill(steep climb, in 4x4) that you should start it in gear?!?!?
i cringed everytime (as i was the autoelec that got to change all of the broken on
