Hi, Just like to know if there is a long and short axle in the 10 bolt? I have two sets of axles from disc brake set up and they are all the same length but I also have a set from drum brake commercial and one is shorter then the other by 13mm. The parts book only lists one part number for both axles for each vehicle eg tonner axle p/n, wagon,sedan,ute axle p/n and Statesman (disc brake) axle p/n (longer studs). It seems to me there is no longer axle but I cannot understand why this ute diff I have has a shorter axle. Cheers Lee

There are only 5 different axles for the 10 bolt:
HQ-WB 1-tonner
HQ-WB drum brake (non tonner)
HZ-WB disc brake
A9X
Commodore
Both sides in each case are the same length.

Thanks for the reply Byron. I buggered up my information. It is actually one of the pair of disc brake axles I have which has a longer one in the set. I did not remove these as I received the diff in a disassembled state. With comparing everything I have

commodore are two different lengths.

The shorter axle in the disc diff is to account for the thickness of the disc, so that the track width is not affected. The disc brake axle also has a smaller flange and a longer centre hub, plus longer studs. I also forgot to mention in my original post

Re disc brake vs drum brake axles. The *axles* themselves are no different. The difference lies in the spacer that sits between the wheel bearing and the plate that bolts to the diff flange.

Hi Guys.
I'm sorry Dre, but Byron is correct. You can't fit HZ/WB rear disc rotors over the flange of drum-brake axles & the distance from the bearing ridge to the flange face is less on the disc brake axles.

Yeah I forgot about having to machine 1.5mm from the edge of the axle flange. This isn't enough to cause a problem though...
That spacer is required when using the disc brake setup as they are thicker and if not used you would have play in and out

It is possible, but you need to machine the bearing surface further up the axle closer to the flange, cut about 1/2" off the end of the axle, machine down the flange so that the rotor will fit over it and fit longer wheel studs. You then still have t

Yeah you can fit the commodore disc brake setup to a 10 bolt, requires a bit of machining to the axle flange and the center of the disc but it all fits. Oh and VH commo wheel bearings.

I'd seriously condiser redrilling the front discs to 120mm PCD and get some 17" rims eg VY SS. Tyres for these are cheap nowadays.

Hi TWODOGS.
I think that should work OK, just make sure you use some tough bolts on the caliper mounts. If you mount it 10mm further out then the shear stress under heavy braking would be much more than standard.

Hi Dr Terry the calliper will not be spaced out, it is the calliper mount from the axle housing flange that will get spaced out so the calliper bolts will remain standard and I want this so the calliper clears the leaf spring. The problem with the seal is
