hi guys, just browsing ebay and saw a 308HP block. I've heard of 149(?) & 179HP's with the steel crank, but My Q is, what cars were HP blocks fitted to, and what's so special about them?

Short answer...nothing is special about them. AFAIK, they are just an early 308 block.

Cheers...Dave

Fitted to early HT's, mainly Broughams as the 308 was initially only available on the Brougham. When someone some day figures outwhat HP means on the 179, we will at least have a clue as the why it is on the 308.

Hi Guys.

Speaking to people who worked in the Holden engine plant in the 60's, there are various versions of events.

The most common of these is that 'HP' meant high performance. The 149 block had no casting number in that spot & the 179 had HP, me

That is something I never knew, ie the very early 253 was blank. I always thought it said 253, and it didn't make sense that they would have 253 and HP, so what you say now makes sense. The only thing that doesn't seem right though is the 179

That is of intrest, I thought they always had 253 or 308 cast on the side as well. So, from what I can gather from this the 308 HP block was from the 60's early 70's holdens ? This would make finding on in a HZ a little unusual ? This would mean a HT bloc

Unless it was a factory manual HZ Premier a HP block would have been useless as they were all Trimatic pattern, and you couldn't easily change the bolt pattern on the early blocks. There is no way that a HP block was factory in a HZ. From what I have seen

Looking at that block & getting the casting number & prefix may help determine it's true identity. I agree with everything Byron & Terry have noted.
There are certainly some oddball ones around though, I but have been told by a reliable sydney wrecker h

The NT is simply a Nasco replacement short motor for a stock 308 for HQ to whenever the practice stopped. The actual numerals off the engine number will tell you when it was made, as will the casting date. I seriously doubt that the NT block you are refer

Isn't that an 'HZ' prefix for an L34.

Not for a Nasco replacement short motor.

I just read one of my posts above, and it reads like I was suggesting that your pride be shattered. It's poorly written. I meant the dude who had the HZ with the HP block.

Just a little side story whilst discussing engine block numbers. A friend of mine had a HT 253 Monaro many years ago and on the side of the block where the block size is cast, it had 186 instead of 253. Figure that one out.

That's a Statesman engine. L34 engine numbers start with HZ, or NZ for a Nasco or GMP&A replacement short motor. I can't remember what series the 73 number came out of (Warren will know), but it's most likely also a HJ-HZ block which means it will be a T

L34 engine nummber would start HZ or NZ. 11QT is a statesman 308 from HQ to HZ. engine number would indicate HX era.
