Take advantage of the turbo pattern & fit a TH700R4(aka 4L60) from a VN or VP, and get the economy & cruising advantage of a 4 speed auto with overdrive.
Cheers,

OK, well the trimatic only ever came with a tri-pattern bellhousing, not a turbo/chev pattern, so unless you can find an aftermarket supplier of bellhousings <edit - see the post Dylan just made directly above> to allow a tri to bolt to a turbo, you

Hi Guys.

I don't know if it would be an easier or cheaper option, but GM in South Africa used Tri-Matics behind Chev 4 & 6 cylinders. These have the standard Chev bolt pattern & would be cheap as, at wreckers in SA.

Another easy option is to get a TH350. These were standard in some VB-VH Commodores. The box will fit in behind the 308, using the same tailshaft. You will also need (all standard Holden):

VB-VH TH350 shifter rod.
VB-VH TH350 speedo cable.
VB-VH TH35

An early WB Statesman or late HZ 308 auto one will also do, but the shift rod and speedo cable will be wrong. You will also need the Commodore gearbox x-member.

i've never done it but apparently you can remove the pin + swap the lower shifting arm to the other side, but that still won't help with the speedo...

You don't need to as Commodore trimatics shift on the left also. Only the TH350 rod is needed (it may be the same as trimatic but can't remember exactly).

You can get a adaptor plate to go from 308 pattern to chev pattern, Although I think getting an aftermarket bellhousing would be easier because to use an adaptor, you have to space out the convertor and cut the tailshaft, both by the thickness of the adap
