I have an fc and am looking to put a vn diff into it. i have just finished putting a 186 into it with similar specs to an xu1. i also have a supra five speed behind it. i have been told that i should be looking at higher ratios than the standard 3.08 because of the gearbox. i was just wondering if anything like sss or utes came out with 3.5's or higher as standard.

The VN used a Borg Warner (or BTR) 78 series diff, as did all commodores from VL onwards up to VT series 1, and later build VK 6s.
These were also used in Falcons, Skylines, and Pintaras of the era.
You can get the following ratios (and more): 3.08 |

just wondering though, i read a previous article which someone said about spline differences. if this is the case, is it not a simple pull out put in changeover for centres. also is there any identification stamps, etc. to tell the difference?

The spline difference is for VL LSD and open centre.
LSD and later diffs use 28 splines, while VL open centre use 25 splines.
If you already have the diff, then changing the ratio is only a matter of swapping the pinion & crownwheel, and will have n |

VN S had LSD as an extra cost option.

Why not just put a HR banjo rear in (they bolt straight in) with either:
3.90 3.55 3.36 3.08 or 2.78
These are readily available and if you want you can go fine spline (same as late LJ XU1) by picking up an HX to WB centre, not sure if LX also

I agree with Warren. If you must go stronger, ive heard early Volvo diffs are the same width and same stud pattern, and strong. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? Not all manual 5L got LSD - it was still optional.
As far as the R31, grab yourself an LSD centre from a BW78. As far as the box, you'd be best off finding another manual one & swapping bits. Or try one of the aussie skyline forums.
