Here's one of those things that hide out of sight in your car, slowly deteriorating over time, that might bite some of us eventually...
Smelt a funny fuel smell in the Torana the other day... almost disregarded it, as you can always smell fuel or oil in these old girls. However, I took a closer look.
Turned out to be the 6-inch piece of 8mm rubber hose that goes from the fuel filler to the tank as a breather hose. The rubber had perished and there was fuel dribbling out. Only picked up because it was a full tank of fuel.
Got under the tank to check the other ones (there are 6 more small sections joining up the various fuel lines in front of the tank. These had deteriorated BADLY, and were also dribbling fuel... and three of these sit above the exhaust pipe!
So, if you're running a fairly stock or original old car that's around this age, do yourself a favour and check those rubber joiners around your fuel tank fittings! Seven pieces in total on the Torana, plus two in the engine bay around the fuel filter. Several different sizes, we got away with a length of 6.5mm line, and some 10mm line. Some 8mm would have been handy, too. Oh - and some new hose clamps to replace the rusty clips.
Very easy job that might save yourself and your car if yours are perishing too.
Cheers,
Jason.
