Hi trebor.
The 186A prefix is for an HR 186 engine, although the 470386 serial number seems a bit high.
The H & L casting on the head is an interesting one, because the 161 hi-comp & 186 hi-comp use different heads one has L & the other has H, so th |

Interesting Guys. Back b4 i could get a licence, i brought a HD special, had the same starting prefix on donk{can still remember it-186p111265!},must have been a 186 out of a HK than? Dr Terry,u confused me with your reference to "186A".was that a typo? And |

H and L are high and low compression respectively. If you have both versions havea look at the shape of the combustion chambers, the H is a smaller kidney shaped chamber than the L one. Well that's how they look on mine anyway!!

Hi Peter, cheers for your reply. have two heads here with same size shape combustion chambers, both have H stamped on them.mate over road with a HP{179} had head off it,small chambers with L stamped on it. Confusing and makes for an interesting topic. Th |

looks like a typo, but as dr terry also says the H & L casting refers to heads from different capacity motors rather than the comp. ratio. AFAIK different piston height was a major determining factor of compression.

I might be wrong, but I thought the H and L did stand for HIGH and LOW respectively, but only applied to engines that used the large and small combustion chambers to achieve low and high compression versions of the same engine eg the 161 and 173. That is |

Hi Guys.
The 186A bit was more of a mis-read than a typo, I must have been half asleep.
Any way as the others have pointed out, the 186P470386 is an HK/T/G 186 but with the 470386 serial number makes it a very late HG. Also the 7437395 head will hav |

The High and low compression from Byron works for me also. The heaa that you have listed is used for both 186 high compression and 161 low compression.
I like the theory about the engineers name, I have "suggested" that they might be someones initials

By the way-were the 308hp and the 179hp released at roughly the same time? Rob |

forget that question, that would have been with the release of the HT around 1969 the 08 was released.trying to tie in the hp179 and hp 308 stampings-makes less sense now!! |
