I'm sure someone said a little while ago that they are painted black.. not that you can't paint any other tri black.?

Thanks Mr Void, I am going to be looking at a VK that has been messed around with, and I want to make sure it is the correct box. It would also help to know the range of engine numbers to make sure it is a black block, as this stuff could have been painte

Almost all black blocks are different from blue blocks where the engine number is stamped. Blue blocks have a smooth machined surface like a red motor. Black blocks are rough cast where the number is stamped. An EFI engine is even easier to identify, as t |

Thanks Byron, that is very helpful indeed. Are you able to shed any light on differentiating an EFI box from a standard 6cyl Trimatic? Thanks, Tom

The EFI gearbox should be coded LR. The EST one should be LP. There is also another hint:
EST engine trimatics had a hole in the bellhousing just behind the head for the crank position sensor to poke through. |

And the EFI trimatics ran a filthy big reinforced bellhousing.

I ripped one out of a VK EFi to put in a mate's HJ ute, and it wouldn't fit.
There were other issues, but one of the main differences was the wider cast edge around the perimeter of the bellhousing. It also had extra webbing on it.

OK. I never used one in a column shift situation, but I have used them behind red motors in HQ-WB. How did you get a left shift VK box to work with a right shift column shift mech??? Seems odd that Holden would do this simply for the EFI engine, as there |

I am working on the assumption the efi box is actually a V8 box... someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I will get any commodore box if thats the case for my 6cyl hg monaro.

The EFI box had beefed up internals similar in spec to the V8 trimatic.
