Hi guys,

Looking to do a swap of a VN Commie for my HQ Ute with a bloke up the line.

What sort of things should I look our for / be wary of in the 3.8 V6 powered number?

Inside check there are no bubbles in the hood lining, they tend to end up dropping down to around ear hight. Rest is the normal check's rust, susp, steering, oil leaks etc. Pay's to have a good mechanic check it all over for you. Timing chains where weak

I had a mates one for awhile and it failed the wof for rust below the rear windscreen. Check from inside the boot with a torch for any rust in that area.

The timing chain noise can be masked when you give the VN a boot off the mark. Try initially accelerating really easily and listen for the rattle.

If it is a Series1 VN V6, the thermostat will be at the back of the motor. The Series2 motors are a bette

Is it easy to hook up hood lining again or not? It seems that this one does have issues with the roof dropping.

Just whip out the board, rip off the fabric, scrub it with a wire brush (to remove all the foam residue that is left) then buy 2m of new material from a trim supply shop (Daleys in Sydney do it for between $25 & $30/m).

Follow commodorenut's advise, don't do the classic bodgie repair-------About 1000 thumb tacks pinning the material back up, still laugh every time I see it done:) If thats all thats wrong with it so far, not to bad.

I wish I hadv'e known that Mick , I pulled the material out of our VN and just rubbed all the crap off , then painted it with grey primer .

Did it. Lining is coming away, but desn't look too bad. Body pretty much immac. Does have one issue though, it shudders on take off, up to about 50 kph.

Sounds like you may have a broken engine mount Jabba...or perhaps the tail shaft cenre bearing is chewed out.
VN's are great cars, and quite easy to work on once you become familiar with them.

fuel filler return lines always perish, cheap to repair, expensive while its broken (fuel dumped on ground )
power steering lines.
idler pulley, ($30 for a new one)
belt,

Rust is limited to a patch about the size of little fingernail on edge of boot itself. The hood lining is dropping and bonnet lining is coming away from clips.

If the connector you are talking about is a brown wire, coming out of the loom behind the LH strut tower, that is the tacho signal used by workshops when playing with them.

it could be the old A/C drier.
is it aluminium fittings?

Looks like it could be A/C related. The vehicle doesn't have A/C in it currently, but there is another fitting around the back of the canister I hadn't noticed which looks like the A/C filler attachment.

The canister is about 4 inches round by 5 tall.

Driveshaft balance reduced but didn't cure vibration. Is between 30 and 50 kph under moderate load. Leadfooting it vibration goes away, and coating through that speed range also no vibration.
