Hi guys!
i have a 1954 FJ ute with 6 volt,
i keep having the same argument with dad over n over, for the past week or two the battrey has to be recharged every single day for it to kick over,"i start it every day" i have topped the water up in the battrey and i put it on charge 3-4 hours every day,(with a 6 volt charger ofcuz,im not stupid) =p i know the battrey is dead but dad keeps saying its fine! just keep recharging it, so to prove a point to him i had it on recharge for 24 hours the day before yesterday and yesterday ive started it and went for a 15min drive when i came back home ive turned the car of then tried to start it again but it didnt start again.
whats everyone's oppinon? is the battrey died? or does it needs 2-3 days recharge like what dad say?

Is your alternator charging the battery? Without that you will be forever running it flat, esp after a drive.

As above, check the charge from your alternator and if it is strong turf the battery in my opinion..

Guys. FJ. 6V. Probably a generator, not an alternator. Troublesome bits of gear. Most likely the problem. |

had a HB torrie years ago and originally it had a generator on it.nothing but problems with it. battery going flat regulary,light going dim,etc etc.had it changed to an alternator and no more probs.i realise u r running 6 volt so maybe thats another story |

Ah 6V, I know of this ancient stuff.
First, as the electricals are 6V is your AmpereHour rating on the battery big enough ? It can sometimes be double that of a 12V battery.
As mentioned, it is probably a generator and regulator combo. Either could

6 volt systems are a problem, every terminal /earth has to be clean and tight.
With engine idling fast turn the lights on and try to toot the horn. If it doesn't work properly the battery is carked or the regulator is dead or needs adjusting.

I am going to be different and go for the Battery as the problem. It should start the car twice within 15 minutes. I drove my old Kingswood without a working alternator to work, then home after work at night. Each way was 40 minutes. The coil takes very

Geez 6 volt hey, I remember on an FJ I had you needed to shine a torch into the headlights to check whether they were on! Buggers me how people drove at night with 6V lights in their FXs and FJs!! Good luck finding the fault, you have a lot of leads her |

wow! what a response, i wasn't expecting this many replies so quickly,it all appreciated tho. i think it could be all three problems cuz firstly the battery is around two years old n really only used it for the first half year,plus the lights don't dim wh

Hi Griezy, Interesting, as it appears that you may be flogging a dead horse ! No point in recharging it for 2-3days, if it's gone past what is deemed it's normal life expectancy. Throw the battery into the nearest recycling depot, as you are defi Edited by user 19 years ago
