Hi jimbob,

It is a long time since I had to do a compression check on a 186, but from memory the specs are 130 - 170 psi with less than 10% variance between cylinders.

Rebuilt time would be about 90 - 100 psi, IIRC.

Cheers...Dave

Just to add to the above, they are hot figures.

It may also pay to do a "wet" test after the dry one on any cylinder that is substantially down compared to the others, to see if the rings or the head/valves are worn.

To do a "wet" test, squirt som

Thanks for the info Qute.. Did the compression test, the figures were good over all, 1-170 psi, 2-160 psi, 3-175 psi, 4-180 psi, 5-175 psi, 6-175 psi. Did a wet test on No 2, and the figures raised to 180 psi, so i suspect the rings are leaking slight

You're welcome jimbob.

With numbers that high, I wouldn't worry too much about number 2 being down a bit and it is close to the 10% limit anyway.

The rocker adjustment CAN affect the results as can not having the throttle wide open too. If the rocke

I am worried that the rockers are to tight, which might explain the rough idle and fuel consumption. The number of turns on each rocker nut is very different on each post to get down to 'no lash'(3-4 turns on some) , does this mean worn spring???, maybe

You have a lot of compression - maybe you dont have enough carburation?? Could just need a good tune!

What are your motor specs?? Cam?? Headwork?? How long since it was rebuilt??

Generally the 1/4 of a turn rule works the treat wether new or old

Keith, I don't know what the internals of the donk are.. got the engine from wreckers about a year ago and had problems ever since. We partially stripped and inspected for damage and wear before fitment but that was it. Maybe it should be lumpy on idle,

Jimbob,

Maybe it was fitted with a mild Cam ?

You will need to fit a Degree wheel to determine this.

As Keith HP said you have heaps of Squeeze.
Maybe it was a mildly worked engine and will always run a bit lumpy (this will also mean slightly hi

Hi jimbob.

Casting number is the best to start with, near the LH (passenger's side) front.
