G'day guys,

I'm thinking of changing the 161 head off my Red 186 block for one I have in the garage so I can save a little money on fuel. However, I do not recognise the number stamped. It is:- 2811930 HOLDEN D 151 - L. (single post rockers, Hyd lifters)

Now I don't think it's a 186 head or 179, I need to know if this Head will cause any problems on the 186 block, like the 161 did. I am trying to make an engine that has a little grunt without reving it's tits off, hard to tune properly or not user friendly. Something reliable but fun.

As much detail about this style of head would be greatly apprieciated and if there a assiociated risks or problems that go with fitting it to 186 and extras ie: valves, cam, pushrods, carby settings (WW), pumps. Also the 161 has YT valves, would these be an advantage on the other Head depending on ID for performance?

On a seperate issue, I also have a Manifold with number: 7432238-88-2 stamped on it. Anybody got an Id for this?

Thanks for the help James

Strange,

I thought that a 161 Head (that is already a runner) would give you Better Fuel Economy (with its Higher Compression), than would a 186 Head ?

666, I have been told that the Compression is to high for the fuel these days (11:1), even 98 octane not high enough or good grade to handle it. Does use the juice though.

Na thats fine 666, I can't say I have heard pinging as yet, but I realy do want to reduce the fuel consumption, performance and comfort (within reason). I might have a big cam fitted I don't know yet, will find out when I take it out in 2 weeks. The He

i got fond memories of an eh of a mates, it was a stock 179 running a stock 149 head. Once you convinced it to start it went hard and gained an extra 5 to 10 miles in top speed. It was fun.

Hi jimbobhtute.

The 2811930 casting is an HQ/HJ/LJ 202 head. It's basically the same as a 179/186 head except that it has fixed rocker gear from the factory.

I know this isn't what you asked about at all, but another description of the pinging noise that I've heard is someone rattling a glass jar of nails in your engine bay. Works for me - easy to pick and avoid once you've heard it a few times.

Cheers,

Thanks guys, So Dr Terry, Is this 202 Head a better option to choose over the 161 in regards to economy / power??? Depending on what I find out about the cam, I am thinking of putting just the standard 186s cam in or very close to it. (www.crowcams.com.

Hi James,

The 202 head will bring your compression back down into the 9's (9 point something) so you may well get away with 96 octane PULP.

Your 161 head has larger valves (and probably bigger ports too) so you will sacrifice some HP.

If you have

Can anybody explain the main differences between the HQ/HJ/LJ 202 Head I have here and a 186s Head setup, in relation to valve, port size and other dimensions.

cheers james

Hi James,

No idea on valve or port size but all other critical dimensions (including Combustion Chamber size) are identical bar one. The 202 heads use longer pushrods due to the non-adjustable rockers.

Basically, and with the exception of the pushro
