hi guys.
took the "future" HG (not HT like i first thought) for a blat on the weekend and i noticed at idle, when warm, the oil light is on.
when i rev it a bit and bring the revs up about 150-200rpm in drive, it disappears. oil light doesn't come on at all otherwise other than just before starting.
is this a common 186 prob or is the idle just set too low? it "sounds" about right, maybe a touch low, but add the 200rpm with th accelerator and it feels too fast.
what do i do?
think more, post less.

don't take my word for it but if your oil is from coles or just getting old, you might want to change it and see what happens, might be it.

The first time I took my HZ 253 out for a run to the city I almost died as the oil light came on when stuck at the lights after I had been driving for some time. Apparantly I found out that most old Holdens have this problem, at Idle the oil preasure get

I agree with the guys. Are you using crap el cheapo oil ? If you buy Shell, Caltex, Valvoline...you get what u pay for! Fact.
Penrite is THE ONLY oil for my 2 Holdens. Nothing else WILL EVER be used.

Hi all,
Could it be a faulty engine oil switch that gives intermittent readings ?
I would stick to the correct viscosity that the manufacturer suggests for any particular motor. However there are some good oils on the market now, so it's up to the i

ah okay - so the pressure is getting low when warm at idle.
and it is only at idle when at operating temp. doesn;t come on when cold idling (on gas so no choke)
i had a feeling that a thicker grade oil may help - but yeah i normally use Penrite for

G'day I have seen this problem a few times over the years in my workshop. The oil pump sounds worn to me, reason being the light only comes on when the engine is warm and the oil thins out.If u had a restriction it would be worse when the engine is cold a

Don't fret. The Holden factory shop manual states this is perfectly acceptable as long as the light goes out when the revs go just above idling. It is part of the imperfect switch for the light, at idle the pressure is only about 4 psi and some switches d

thanks for that.
oil pump is brand spankers (well, about 20thou old) so it's not that.
if the manual says it's normal then i'll just run slightly thicker oil and see what difference it makes.
cheers for all your help.
