Is the 253 the same block as the 308, is it correct that the same gearboxes will both up on both engines.

yes and no...all 253 are aussie pattern blocks.
308 comes in aussie and turbo pattern.
So an aussie 4 speed or trimatic will bolt up to any 253 and some 308's....a turbohydramatic 350 or 400 will bolt up only to some 308's.

Yes & no.....
While it is the same block externally, the bores are smaller, and the cores aren't as accurate as a 308, meaning that if you bore it out to the 4" bore of a 308 you risk hitting water.
