I have a new roll of heat wrap used for insulating fuel lines I presume it would work on the starter.
Retails around $45, you can have it for $18 plus postage, probably cost about $5 for postage.

Are you planning on wrapping the extractors or starter motor? If you wrap the extractors the will rust out a lot easier.
Do you run a relay to the starter motor. The soleniods in chev starters seem to draw more current than a Holden ignition switch is ha

Wrapping the exhaust will cause it to rust out quicker but I guess you have to balance it against the convenience of not getting your hand burnt off everytime you go near the pipes and there is a belief you get a bit more power with the pipes really hot.

I have always just used a 30 amp Hella relay for my starters and have never had one die on me in near 30 yrs of running chevs. In fact, I use the same style relays for most added in electrics, fans, fuel pumps, nitrous etc, as the wiring and switches in o

Just make sure there is a piece of sheet metal (the more ref

VN-VP V8's use a heat shield on the same old 253/308 starter. Air is one of the best heat insulators you can get - you just need a heat barrier with air between it and the part to be protected, hence Mr Void's and Sandman's recommendations. I used to work

A remote starter solenoid is also MOST useful. My 400 chev used to bind up something terrible when warm, and even a high torque starter used to struggle.
Wiring is usually battery + to starter, with big wire taking power from there to fuse box. Small wi
