I'm no expert on this (there are others here who are), but from what I've read here over the last few years on this topic, it does seem that sometimes engine dates can pre-date a body date by a few months. So it's probably conceivable.
No idea on the

A HQ is dated when the engine meets the body. So once an engine is built it is sent to the factory and attached to a chassis. The chassis is then fitted to a car and the car is dated. How long do you think this process would take?
Now some engines do h

It will be obvious if the 30/6/71 cast date engine was originally fitted to a HQ - the engine number will start with Q (or 11Q for a Statesman). Otherwise it will start with the engine size eg 186, 253 or possibly but unlikely G as in GD, GL etc. As Warre |

Byron, I doubt that GM-H wold sell a second hand car 4 years later with anew engine, it would no longer be under warranty in 1974 and would just be sold as a second hand car.
As for Vic roads sayingthat the engine was not fitted to another car, that ne

I've heard of internal sales to employees of prototypes, staff cars etc. The latest AMC magazine talks about exactly that happening at Ford. But yes, it would have been a secondhand car, and if the employee worked in the right department then a new engine |

But even if the person worked in the right department it would be a NASCO replacement engine, as the factory could not order an engine without a VIN.
for a car to survive that long is very much against GM-H policy with regard to its fleet, the car woul

Agree that the scenario I proposed is very unlikely. Just trying to explain one possible solution (albeit extremely unlikely). Out of interest, what is the prefix and first three numbers on the engine in it now? Does it start with N?

Most rego departments removed a lot of the info when the big bad millenium bug thing was going around, they also got rid of a lot of info on cars that had not been registered for many years.

I can confirm it was an internal/special sales car. Warranty start and first registration was 10/71. No engine number was recorded as was apparantly normal with internal sales cars.

Also just because a car was made in NSW does notmean that it would be registered in NSW.

It is most likely is a reco motor, and like Warren said it could have been any old block they had at the time in the workshop. The 308 in my HJ was changed out at 200,000 kms and is a 78 block.

I don't. All i've learnt is from reading, asking questions, looking at cars etc. I remember back in around 1994 when I found my Warwick Yellow HK GTS327 sitting neglected in a 4x4 wrecking yard, looking at the ID plates and knowing what 81837 meant, but |

Hi Guys.
To add to what Byron has said, one of my favourite sayings (which I've actually stolen from Warren) goes
" The more you know, the more you know what you don't know".

It does get frustrating too when well respected publications like AMC make mistaks with their facts, or publish information so that it is not clear and it can be interpreted other ways. Like the latest AMC where they state that the 253 was available in th |
