Hi all,

just had car serviced and tuned within last 3 or 4 weeks. running like a dream (actually had to turn radio off to make sure care was still running - not bad for 308). anyway, late last week it began running quite rough and stalling when at a stand still. thought it may be fuel related (dirty, clogged carb etc) all checks out no problems. so went driving at night - rough idle and stalling much worse at night. looked at the battery guauge on a HZ gts dash - and at a stand still the volt meter just slowly began creeping down - then would begin to idle roughly and stall.

so here is my question - i have had distibutor and coil checked only last friday - alls good. so can a crappy alternator or battery be causing my rough idle, stalling and ever slowly draining volt gauge.

cheers geoff

I had the same thing the other day. I filled up the car with gas and went on a 15 minute highway run. When i had finished the idle was ok again. Sometimes i get dirty fuel blocking the carb is my guess. Naturally it only happens when i am being lazy a

It sounds like the Alt is the problem. The alt should be charging at about 13.7 to 14.2 volts running and about the same with the headlights on.If the headlights/dashlights are getting dimmer the longer you drive, it also shows that you are running out of

Definetly not fuel, as the car is idling perfect again. but still staling when in drive and at a stop (stop lights). will give the alternator trick a whirl. thanks for tip hq ss. hopefully it is just a dodgy alternator.

Sorry to resurrect an old case, but very much along these lines.

HQ drives AOK, auto gear change is fine, yet the HQ will stall intermittantly with a rough idle. To cut a long story short went thru all the usual checks. No answer.

For some reason I

Why do you think you would have no advance at all with a buggered vacuum advance module? The centrifugal mechanism should still have worked, just no vacuum topup in high vacuum conditions like highway cruising. You should have regained a few MPG too

Hi Byron,

I agree its no such much it was not working. The diaphragm had a hole in it. So it was leaning the mix out by sucking pure air thru the dizzy. Just like a carby not seating properly. And with 5"/mg vac at idle...the 253 is hardly getting enou
