Hi guys, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to old Holdens as I've only been into modern Japanese sports cars in the past. I've got a 1966 HR Special with a 202 conversion and Trimatic with floor shifter. I don't like the way it revs high when cruising with only 3 gears and the fuel suffers I think because of this. Is there a 4 speed automatic that bolts to the 202 at all? A mate of mine with a SLR5000 replica suggested a different diff ratio as he runs an auto with a 3.55 diff and he said it's quite economical on fuel. Kind regards, Chris.

What diff are you running? Maybe a 3.55 or 3.36?
Changing to a 3.08 diff would be the quickest easiest option to get less revs on the highway. |

I thought the same thing but using a better engine - the VN/VP 3.8 and TH700R4. However I have heard of an adapter for the TH700 to Holden 6. Try Mal Wood in QLD or CRS in Victoria.

Just a personal opinion. I would not put a Nissan/ VL or a V6 3.8 engine in an old Holden. Ever.
A 202 is a good cruiser, and can be used as a reliable everyday engine. Easy to fit to old Holden as you can see as you have one. If I wanted power I would |

All that has been said is all good info but you gotta ask yourself what you want from your HR and how much money and time your prepared to give up. If you want a quick fix go for changing your diff centre if that doesn't solve your problem an engine trans |

i remember talking to Geoff Dellow from Dellow Automotive, he informed me at the time that he can make, or does make and adaptor plate to fit the turbo 700 box onto the red 6.
That may help you

A 4 speed manual will still have the same top gear and the same revs on the highway!
A 4 speed auto T700 has overdrive on top gear.
Manual gearboxes have 5th gear as overdrive.
Your easiest option in manual would be a Celica 5 speed conversion. P |

Another easy solution, since you already have a trimatic, stick an Aussie 4spd M22 (fits where a trimatic fits) in it and run a 2.78 diff. Just don't do it with an M20 or you'll hate 1st gear.
